Hello everyone,
A few years ago, I bought an IKEA Brimnes dresser, and now I’m noticing that various parts show wear or damage from everyday use. Before I start ordering any replacement parts, I wanted to ask here in the forum: Which replacement parts do you consider the most important or most commonly needed for the Brimnes series?
I’m especially interested in:
- Which parts are most likely to break with frequent use?
- Are there replacement parts that are essential to keep on hand?
- Are there any differences between the dresser and bed versions of the series?
I want to purchase replacement parts as efficiently and specifically as possible to enjoy the furniture for a long time without ordering unnecessary parts. Thanks in advance for your insights!

From a technical perspective, I recommend prioritizing the following replacement parts:
- Drawer slides (including the mounting rails)
- Plastic buffers for damping
- Handles (especially if they are visually damaged or broken)
The slides must have precise dimensions, as incorrect measurements can cause problems when opening and closing. Replacing them is often more cost-effective than discarding the entire dresser.
For the Brimnes bed series, special attention should also be paid to the metal connectors for the slatted frame support. These are the load-bearing points and can weaken over time.

What ultimately helps is regular maintenance of all moving parts and replacing smaller components before they completely fail. That’s a good point, thank you. How do you handle this in practice? Do you regularly check drawer slides and joints, or do you wait until there is damage?
I’m also asking because some replacement parts at IKEA are becoming harder to find online or in stores. If parts are no longer manufactured, how do you switch to compatible alternatives? Does anyone have recommendations for third-party replacement rails or handles that are compatible with Brimnes?

Do you regularly check the drawer slides and connections, or do you wait for damage to occur?I inspect the drawer slides and screws roughly every 6 months. This usually helps prevent unexpected problems.
Regarding third-party suppliers: I have used replacement slides from other manufacturers before, but they didn’t fit perfectly because Brimnes often uses specific dimensions. My recommendation is to use original replacement parts whenever possible, even if they cost a bit more. The fit and durability are usually better.

If certain parts are no longer manufactured, how do you switch to compatible alternatives? This is an issue with IKEA, as many specialized fittings are only offered by them.
If spare parts are no longer available, you can try the following approaches:
- Compatible universal drawer slides that fit the dimensions.
- Using alternative materials, such as slightly reinforced metal rails with similar load capacities.
- Minor modifications to integrate standard drawer runners.
However, this requires some DIY skills.
Regular maintenance: I recommend visual inspections every six months. Waiting too long before addressing damage usually results in extra work.
