Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a piece of furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series and am currently wondering how sturdy the shelves in this series actually are. I’m particularly interested in how resistant the shelves are to load, moisture, and scratches, as I often store heavy items in them and occasionally liquids might spill nearby.
Has anyone had practical experience with the load-bearing capacity and durability of the shelves in Brimnes furniture? Any information on the material quality and tips on how to best maintain the shelves would also be very helpful.
Thanks in advance for your insights!

The shelves inside the IKEA Brimnes cabinets are mostly made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface. This combination of materials is generally stable, but it has weaknesses when exposed to direct, prolonged contact with water, as particleboard can absorb moisture and swell.
For normal household use, such as storing books or clothing, the load-bearing capacity is absolutely sufficient. Scratches can be somewhat prevented by the melamine coating but cannot be completely avoided under mechanical stress.
Recommendation: Do not leave liquids standing on the shelves for long periods, and try to distribute heavy loads as evenly as possible.

So it’s best not to put anything too heavy on them and to clean off dust and moisture every now and then. That way, they’ll stay reliable for you! 😉
To explore the topic in more detail:
The base panels in the IKEA Brimnes series are typically made of particleboard covered with a melamine resin foil or a similar coating material. This surface provides good protection against short-term moisture and scratches, but
- with standing water, the material can swell and become unstable
- the load-bearing capacity is limited under point loads with very high pressure
Practical tip: If you want to store heavy items, it is best to use a solid base, such as a thin board, to distribute the pressure.
For maintenance, a damp cloth without aggressive cleaners is sufficient. Do not use abrasive agents, as they can damage the protective layer.
In summary: The floors are durable enough for normal household use but not suitable for industrial or heavy mechanical stress.
