Hello everyone,
I have noticed that one of the drawer slides on my IKEA Malm chest of drawers is bent, causing the drawer to stick and not slide properly. I want to replace the bent metal slide, but I’m unsure how to proceed since the rails are screwed into the cabinet and partly consist of a combination of ball-bearing slides.
My questions:
1. Do I need to replace the entire slide assembly, or is it enough to replace individual parts?
2. What is the best way to remove the slide without damaging the screws or the wood?
3. Are there any special features of Malm drawers I should be aware of, such as mechanical locks, special clips, or similar?
4. After replacement, are adjustments necessary to ensure the drawer slides smoothly again?
I would really appreciate practical tips and shared experiences. Thanks in advance!

You’ll see, once you’ve installed the new slide, the drawer will run like new again!Exactly! I once had a bent slide on my Malm dresser, which was really annoying. But after I replaced it, everything worked perfectly again.
Sometimes it can be tricky to find the small release mechanisms, but once you know where to look, the process goes smoothly. If you need any help, feel free to ask – I’m happy to assist!
My recommendation:
- Before purchasing a replacement slide, check the exact length and type (soft-close vs. standard ball bearing).
- When dismantling the slide, it is advisable to fully remove the screws rather than just loosen them.
- The releases may be somewhat stiff; gently tilting or pressing helps to avoid damage.
- When installing, ensure the slide is properly aligned and avoid overtightening the screws to prevent the wood from splitting.
Avoiding damage to the cabinet and screw points is essential for long-lasting functionality. If you follow these instructions carefully, the process should go smoothly.
