Hello everyone,

I have some furniture pieces from the Ikea Brimnes series in my apartment, some of which are already several years old. Over time, typical surface damages have developed, such as superficial scratches, small abrasions, and occasional dents, which affect the appearance. I am mainly interested in how to effectively repair or at least visually improve these damages myself, without completely recovering the furniture or resorting to extensive painting. Which methods and materials have proven effective, especially for the white melamine-coated surface? Are there specific products (e.g., markers, fillers, polishes), application tips, or tricks on how to best care for the Brimnes surfaces to ensure they last a long time? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello hanti,

Your issue is quite typical for the Ikea Brimnes series, as these pieces of furniture are sturdy, but the melamine-coated surfaces are sensitive to mechanical damage. Here is a brief guide on how to repair common types of damage:

- Scratches: Small, superficial scratches can be concealed using a white furniture repair marker or wax stick (e.g., for laminate or tabletops). It is important that the color closely matches the white of the Brimnes surface. Apply the marker sparingly and gently blend the repair area with a soft cloth.

- Abrasions and chipped areas: For these, I recommend using a fine filler putty designed for plastics or furniture. After it dries, you can carefully smooth the area with fine sandpaper (grit 400-600).

- Indentations: Unfortunately, these are quite difficult to fix since the surface is not elastic. Sometimes treating the area with furniture polish can improve its appearance, but not more than that.

- Finally, clean with a damp cloth and avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaning agents.

Important: Always test products on an inconspicuous spot first to avoid stains. This way, you stay on the safe side.

If you are interested in specific product recommendations, I can compile those as well.

I hope this helps!

Hello hanti,

I would like to add to miAlessio’s advice and clarify a few points, especially since Ikea Brimnes furniture is usually made from particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which is sensitive to paint finishes.

- For surface scratches, repair markers for laminate or furniture surfaces are recommended, as they adhere well to melamine coatings and effectively cover white areas.

- Use putty based on polyurethane or specifically designed for wood-based materials. After application, be sure to sand with 400 grit sandpaper to avoid a rough surface.

- If the damage penetrates deeper into the material, such as broken edges, use wood glue in addition and, if necessary, reinforce with a small wooden strip.

- Avoid solvents or aggressive cleaners since they can dissolve the melamine surface.

- For maintenance, neutral cleaning agents and a microfiber cloth are ideal.

In summary, the key steps are targeted covering, fine repairing, and then careful maintenance.

If you need more details about the exact composition of repair products and how to apply them, just let me know.

That is very true, but depending on the depth of the scratch, this is only a cosmetic solution. I would like to add that before using markers or filler, it is important to briefly clean the surface, preferably with isopropanol or denatured alcohol, to remove grease or dirt. This ensures better adhesion.

Very good point, as Brimnes furniture often has thin edges vulnerable to chipping. In such cases, I recommend applying a narrow adhesive or furniture edge banding foil, which can be found at hardware stores, after gluing and filling. This protects the repaired area from further damage and provides stability.

One last tip: If you own Brimnes furniture frequently, it is worth keeping a small repair kit with essential items (repair markers, fine sandpaper, filler, wood glue).

If you want, I can prepare a list of ideal products that I personally use.

For scratches and minor damage, I always use
- white wax stick
- fine sandpaper, grit 600

After lightly sanding, simply apply the wax stick and remove any excess material with a clean cloth. This method has worked well for me for years.
