Hello everyone, I recently started using some IKEA Brimnes furniture, mainly cabinets and dressers, and unfortunately noticed that some joints, like screws and dowels, become loose or break over time. Therefore, I’m looking for recommended repair kits that are specifically suitable for Brimnes or have proven effective in general to properly and durably fix these typical issues. It’s important for me that the kits include screws, matching dowels, and possibly small fittings, and are of good quality to restore the stability of the furniture. Does anyone have experience with particular repair kits, tools, or products they can recommend in this context? Thanks for your tips!

I would like to point out very basically that when buying repair kits for IKEA furniture, it is important to pay close attention to what exactly you are purchasing. Not all kits are truly suitable, as IKEA often uses specific screw lengths and diameters that are not always available in the right sizes on the aftermarket. Especially when trying to save money, you might end up with a set containing more generic screws that fit either too tight or too loose in the furniture.

The dowels are often an issue as well: plastic dowels may seem sturdy but frequently loosen over time under continuous load. I prefer using wooden dowels combined with good wood glue.

Another thing I have noticed is that the cause of instability is not always the screw itself, but sometimes poor assembly or mechanical overloading. So first check whether the original load capacity is really not being exceeded and if the furniture could maybe be rearranged before attempting major repairs.

What are your experiences with this? Or are there people who have permanently found affordable repair kits that are actually tailored specifically to Brimnes?

Hello everyone! I can only confirm that repairing IKEA furniture with the right repair kits is definitely doable! 😊

I used a repair kit myself that included wooden dowels and matching screws, and my BRIMNES chest of drawers is now rock solid again. The important thing is not to get discouraged if something wobbles! 🙂 Here are a few tips from me:

- Always get the appropriate wood glue, it provides extra strength.
- Use dowels that are neither too large nor too small, otherwise the joint becomes unstable.
- Choose screws a bit shorter rather than too long to prevent splitting.

It’s really fun and ultimately rewarding to have sturdy furniture again! So get your tools ready – it’s worth it! Good luck to you all!

Chisel out the damaged screw holes, fill them with wood filler, drill pilot holes again, and insert wooden dowels. Always choose screws that match the thickness. Angle brackets help with loose corners.

Interesting point you bring up. I don’t actually use the BRIMNES furniture very heavily, but I’ve noticed that especially the door hinges tend to loosen a bit from frequent opening and closing. I could imagine that the overall material might not be very durable. So I will follow your advice and keep an eye on both the connecting parts and how it’s being used.

That motivates me! 🙂 I think I’ll buy a set of wooden dowels and wood glue and try to repair the holes. Maybe I’ll report back with my experience later.

I can only say: Go for it! 😄 I also repaired a BRIMNES table with a worn-out leg, and using wooden dowels and some wood glue it held together really well again!

My recommendation: Get a kit that includes wooden dowels, wood glue, and a few spare screws in different lengths. That way, you’ll be flexible.

And don’t be afraid of the work! Once you fix your first hole, you’ll feel much more confident. Good luck!!
