Hello everyone,
I have a question about how to permanently prevent the Ikea Brimnes drawers from sticking. The bottom drawer on my unit keeps getting stuck, making it difficult to open or close properly. It seems like over time, due to use or slight deformation, the drawer shifts or jams. I have already checked the drawer slides but couldn’t find any significant damage.
My guess is that the material slightly gives way or that the sliding rails are not optimally adjusted. Are there any proven methods, tips, or tricks to avoid this problem? Whether it’s specific lubricants, adjustment instructions, or additional reinforcements – I would appreciate any advice to improve the condition in the long term. Thanks!

Hello Sopateo,
To effectively prevent the Brimnes drawers from jamming, I recommend first systematically checking the drawer slides and, if necessary, realigning them. Ikea uses simple metal drawer slides in the Brimnes series, which can sometimes be slightly warped or not perfectly parallel.
- Alignment check: Use a spirit level to check the front and the cabinet.
- Clean the slides from dust and dirt, as debris often causes sticking.
- Lubricate with a suitable lubricant, such as silicone spray—avoid oil, as it attracts dust.
- If the drawer is inserted at an angle, correct installation of the drawer runners is also important.
If the drawer is overloaded, the weight can deform the slides. Therefore, an even weight distribution is recommended to prevent permanent deformation.
I hope this helps you.

Lubrication with a suitable glide agent, e.g., silicone spray – no oil, as it attracts dust.A very important note. Additionally, I want to mention that the Ikea Brimnes drawer rails are made of sheet steel, which can slightly bend under load. Jamming often occurs due to a slight change in the angle of the rails relative to each other or reduced glide capability.
For a long-lasting solution, I recommend going through the following steps carefully:
- First, completely remove all drawers and thoroughly clean the rails (damp cloth + mild cleaner).
- Then inspect the inside of the rails for dents or deformations. If you notice slight bends, you can gently reshape them using a rubber mallet or a hammer with a soft head.
- Next, with the drawer installed, spray the rails with a high-quality silicone or Teflon spray. These products provide long-lasting reduction of friction.
- Check the cabinet’s alignment using a spirit level, as previously recommended. Even slight tilting can promote jamming.
- Be sure not to overload the drawer beyond its weight limit. The maximum weight per Brimnes drawer is around 13 kg (29 pounds); exceeding this increases the risk of distortion.
If you like, I can also provide a short guide on correctly adjusting the rails. What about your tools? Do you have a screwdriver, rubber mallet, and spirit level available?

If you want, I could also send you a short guide on how to properly adjust the drawer slides.Oh yes, that would be priceless! The Ikea Brimnes drawers look nice, but sometimes it feels like you need to learn crossbow shooting just to get them running smoothly 😂
Jokes aside: It’s really important not to overfill the drawers with too much stuff (even though we sometimes think we need it all) and to keep the slides clean at all times. Silicone spray is the secret magic here, as kieran and Tebilo mentioned.
Oh, and when you have the drawer out, check the sides for any small chips or warped edges that might be sticking – I’ve caught myself doing that as well.
I think with a little care and a smile, you can get the drawers running smoothly – if not, just shake them out and realign again 😉
