Hello everyone,

I have noticed that the doors of my Pax wardrobe have been squeaking for some time when I open or close them. The squeaking is quite annoying, especially in the mornings. My specific question is: how can I prevent the Pax wardrobe doors from squeaking?

I am already aware of some basic tips such as using lubricants or readjusting the hinges, but perhaps there are more specific recommendations or experiences with the Pax system from Ikea that could help? It would also be important for me to know which lubricants are suitable, the best way to proceed without damaging the doors, and if there are any preventive measures.

I look forward to your advice!

That’s exactly where the problem lies: Many immediately reach for lubricants and then wonder why the squeaking returns. My hypothesis is that if the hinges are properly adjusted and the door is correctly aligned, usually no grease or oil is needed. Often, the squeaking is a symptom of hinges that are too tight or incorrect load on the door.

Perhaps the mistake is that people just lubricate blindly without first checking the mechanics. If you want to adjust correctly, you should loosen the screws, align the door, and, if necessary, check the damping. Lubrication should be more of a last step.

Adjust door hinges slightly.
Using silicone spray or graphite powder as a lubricant is recommended.
Avoid WD-40, as it can damage the plastic in the hinge.

Oh yes, I know that feeling! My Pax also used to squeak loudly, and I found it really annoying! But with a little attention to detail, it’s easy to fix!

First, check if the hinges are properly aligned, then apply some silicone spray, but not too much!

And very important: always check regularly, so opening it becomes enjoyable again!

Good luck, you can do it! 🙂

Hello NEOTAR,

To permanently prevent the squeaking of the Pax wardrobe doors, I recommend the following:

- Before lubricating, make sure the doors are properly aligned. Sometimes the hinges are slightly misadjusted, which can cause increased friction and squeaking.

- Avoid oil-based lubricants like WD-40, as they can damage plastic parts or cause them to stick over time. I recommend silicone spray because it is compatible with materials and does not become sticky.

- Apply the lubricant sparingly to the moving metal parts of the hinge, especially where metal meets metal.

- As a preventive measure, check the hinges every few months and readjust or lightly lubricate them if necessary.

Additionally, you can remove dust and dirt from the hinges with a dry cloth, as these can also cause squeaking.

If you are unsure how to properly adjust the hinges, I can provide instructions.

That sounds very sensible, BeAndrea! 🙂
I’ve also heard that graphite works great as a dry lubricant—no sticky residue at all. Just a pinch on the hinges, and you’re done.

Also, I’d say: don’t worry if you hear some squeaking now and then—adjusting furniture a bit is perfectly normal. Just keep at it, and it will run smoothly again!
