Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to install an Ikea Pax system in my apartment. The problem is that the wall where I want to attach the wardrobe is made of drywall panels. Since Ikea Pax units are relatively heavy and it is recommended for safety reasons to secure the wardrobe to the wall, my question is: What is the best way to fix an Ikea Pax to drywall so that the structure is stable and does not come loose? Which anchors or fastening methods are recommended when there are no load-bearing wooden studs behind the drywall?
I would appreciate concrete advice, possibly including personal experience and important points to consider. Thanks in advance!

Screwing directly into the stud is the first choice.Exactly, that is absolutely correct. Additionally, I would like to mention that drywall without studs can hardly support any weight permanently.
For anyone who might feel unsure: When locating the wall studs, measure at several heights to accurately determine their position.
Personally, I always recommend using at least toggle bolts if no load-bearing elements are found. They distribute the load optimally within the cavity.
One more tip: Before screwing, measure everything precisely and insert the anchors with light pressure, without applying too much force, as this can damage the drywall.
It is important, in addition to selecting the appropriate anchors, to choose the correct screw length. The screw must be long enough to pass through the board and the hollow wall anchor, penetrating sufficiently deep into the anchor. If the screw is too short, the connection will not hold; if it is too long, the metal clamp cannot be properly secured.
Furthermore, the wall should be checked for cracks or damage before installation. This is especially important with older drywall panels, as the fixing points are often brittle.
Recommendation: Use at least 5-6 screw points to distribute the load effectively.

I also mounted my Pax on drywall using metal toggle anchors. A tip: insert the anchor in the right spot and avoid tightening the screw too quickly, otherwise the anchors can become misaligned.
Also, before installation, gently press the wall at several points with a screwdriver to check how stable it is.

Which anchors or fastening methods are recommended when there are no load-bearing wooden beams behind the drywall? If there are indeed no wooden beams present, I recommend the following types of anchors:
- Metal toggle bolts
- Metal expansion toggle anchors
- Heavy-duty cavity anchors
These provide significantly better load distribution compared to plastic anchors and are suitable for the weight of Pax furniture. Plastic expansion anchors are not sufficient for such heavy furniture.
It is also important to use screws with adequate length and diameter (at least 5 mm diameter, length at least 50 mm (2 inches)).
Using multiple anchors (at least 4-6) distributes the load better and increases stability.

I would recommend everyone to pay attention to the specified load ratings when purchasing anchors. Also, before installation, make sure to drill the recommended hole size precisely and properly set the anchor before screwing it in.
The distribution of the fastening points is also crucial – more points and even distribution. Especially with large Pax wardrobes, it would be risky to secure them at only one point.

In my case, I screwed into the metal studs, which gave me the greatest security. This is the safest method, as metal or timber studs provide a load-bearing structure. If possible, it’s definitely worth the effort to locate these studs.

It’s important not only to choose the right anchors but also to pay attention to the screw length.Exactly. The screws must be long enough to securely engage the clamps of the hollow wall anchors and carry the full load. I recommend at least 60 mm (2.4 inches) screw length.
Also, make sure the drywall is in perfect condition—cracks or damp spots could compromise the fastening.
Finally, I’d like to ask again: Does anyone have direct experience with Ikea Pax wall fastenings on drywall, especially with heavy interior fittings or doors with substantial weight?
