Hello everyone,

I am planning to create a modern, practical, and adaptable storage solution for my home office and have been considering the IKEA Platsa system. However, I am still unsure how to make the most of the possibilities that modern storage design offers with this system.

I am especially interested in how to achieve a smart layout with Platsa that remains flexible while also looking visually contemporary—for example, through the right combination of fronts, lighting, and modular accessories.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to best plan the system so that it is both functional and stylistically up-to-date and high-quality? Are there any special tricks when designing the modules or using doors and interior fittings that I should keep in mind?

I look forward to your advice!

Hello OZANBEN,

First of all, a well-formulated starting point! Your question about a modern yet flexible design with IKEA PLATSA perfectly highlights the strengths of this system. To address your points specifically, here is a suggestion on how you can proceed:

- Planning: PLATSA allows you to combine individual modules in different heights and widths. It is important to measure the room height exactly, as the system’s greatest strength is its adaptability to niches and unusual room dimensions.

- Layout: Depending on the intended use, consider whether to combine open shelves, closed cabinets, or doors with glass fronts. A balanced mix creates a very modern look.

- Doors and Fronts: IKEA offers several front options – from smooth, matte finishes to textured surfaces. For a truly elegant look, I recommend matte white or graphite-colored fronts combined with discreet handles or push-to-open mechanisms.

- Lighting: LED strips can usually be easily attached to shelves or under-mounted shelves. This enhances the aesthetics and ensures that your cabinet concept is showcased optimally, even in darker corners.

- Interior Organization: Drawers with dividers, hanging rods, and metal shelves provide maximum flexibility. It’s best to plan here which types of items (file folders, clothing, electronics) you mainly want to store – the interior configuration varies accordingly.

My question to you: How large is the room, and what type of items do you primarily want to store? This helps to recommend the modules more precisely.

I hope this helps you already.

Hi OZANBEN,

I really like your idea! I recently set up a PLATSA system myself and was initially a bit overwhelmed by all the options. Thanks to Gafiel’s detailed tips – they were very helpful.

From my experience, I can say: don’t get stressed by the many choices. It may seem chaotic at first, but it’s worth taking the assembly step by step.

Personally, I started with a small basic frame and then gradually added more components. If you find that something doesn’t fit along the way, you can often still make adjustments.

What helped me was making a list of the items I wanted to store – basically an inventory. This made planning drawers, compartments, and doors much easier.

If you ever feel overwhelmed or uncertain about decisions, don’t worry, I went through the same. The exchange here in the forum will definitely help! 🙂

Yes. First, plan your main purposes (storage for files, technical equipment, personal belongings). Use drawers at the bottom and open compartments or glass doors at the top. This makes the design feel lighter and more modern.

As an addition: PLATSA stands out especially due to its adaptability to room dimensions between 20 and 60 cm (8 to 24 inches) in depth and up to about 2.79 m (9 ft 2 in) in height. For an efficient, modern cupboard concept, I recommend:

- Use the full room height by building modules without bases and attaching a top panel.

- Combine different front materials, for example, matte painted doors with open shelves in a wood finish, to create contrasts that look contemporary.

- Pay attention to standard dimensions for internal organization to keep accessories reusable. For file folders, a depth of at least 40 cm (16 inches) is practical.

- Integrate LED lighting systems controlled by motion sensors for convenience.

- Use side panels and adjustment sets from IKEA to visually unify irregular wall sections.

This approach ensures a well-thought-out, modern appearance and versatile usability, even in small or awkwardly shaped rooms.
