Hello everyone,

I recently ordered some furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series, including a bed and two nightstands. Since I’m usually home alone, I want to assemble the furniture as efficiently and easily as possible without outside help. The main challenge for me is that some parts are quite heavy and bulky. Additionally, I don’t have a way to assemble larger pieces on the floor, so I often have to work on the furniture fully assembled.

Therefore, my question is: What is the best way to assemble IKEA Brimnes furniture alone? Are there any tips, preparatory steps, or tools (beyond the usual Allen key) that make assembly easier? Are there recommended sequences or advice on how to proceed most effectively with this model to ensure stability and avoid damage?

I appreciate any specific recommendations, especially from those with experience with this series. Thank you!

Hello gla31,

Your plan to assemble the Brimnes furniture on your own is definitely achievable – with a few systematic approaches, the process can be made much easier. Here is a structured step-by-step guide that has proven effective for Brimnes:

- Preparation: Organization is key. Spread out and sort all package contents – screws, panels, fittings – preferably sort them into small containers to avoid losing anything.
- Tools: An extra help is often a cordless drill with low torque (be careful not to overtighten and damage the material). A rubber mat can also help to prevent scratches during assembly.
- Working height: Try to find a stable surface (e.g., a workbench or a stool) so you don’t have to work lying on your back on the floor, which can quickly become uncomfortable.
- Assembly order: For Brimnes, it makes sense to start by assembling the side panels with the brackets. This provides structure before installing the back panel and later the shelves. Always slightly tighten all screws first, then fully tighten them. This allows corrections if something does not fit perfectly.
- Handling heavy parts alone: For large panels, you can support them against a wall or in a corner. If possible, rotate them slowly and with small movements rather than lifting them completely.

Avoid forcing parts together – Brimnes components are sturdy, but precise alignment during assembly helps maintain stability.

If you like, I can also send you a small checklist as a summary. Good luck, with perseverance you’ll succeed!

Short and practical: Attach the back panel last, after loosely assembling all the other sides first. Use a cordless screwdriver with the lowest torque setting and a door stop or small stool as leverage when handling large parts.

I basically agree with that, but I wonder whether the recommendation "First loosely tighten all screws, then fully tighten them" can be applied unconditionally for the Brimnes? Especially with the fittings on the bottom panels and the shelves, precise adjustment is important, as small manufacturing tolerances often come into play.

My experience with the Brimnes unit was that some screws need to be tightened quite firmly to achieve sufficient stability – sometimes "loosely tightening first" on individual connections led to wobbly spots for me.

Maybe a flexible approach is appropriate here: loosely tighten everything, but tighten the stronger connections firmly right away. I wonder if anyone has reliable experience on when it’s better to tighten screws firmly from the start and when not with the Brimnes.

I’m happy to give you a detailed answer since I’ve had some personal experience assembling Brimnes furniture solo.

First: Allow yourself enough time and plan on two to three hours for assembly so you don’t have to rush – the series is sturdy but requires precise work.

Tools: Beyond the included Allen key, I recommend a cordless drill with adjustable torque, a small rubber mallet set, and – if possible – a clamp in case you need to hold a panel in place.

Sequence: Most Brimnes components consist of several panels connected with metal fasteners. It’s important to secure one side for attaching the side panels while keeping the other side slightly flexible. This way, you can better align the furniture.

Another tip: I usually install the back panel only partially at first, until most panels are correctly positioned. Only then do I fully attach the back. This prevents stresses.

Handling heavy parts: I place large panels on soft blankets during assembly to avoid scratches and try not to stand panels on their edges but lift them carefully. It’s also a good idea to stick some non-slip felt or foam pads under the furniture once assembled – this protects the floor and makes moving it much easier.

Finally: Be patient and check all parts for any damage before starting – even small transport damages can cause fitting issues.

I hope this helps!
