orhanlaHello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble my new Ikea Platsa wardrobe, which will be placed against a wall made of wood paneling. The problem is that the included mounting options for the PLATSA backing panels are usually designed for concrete or drywall. Therefore, my specific question is: How can I securely and permanently attach the Ikea PLATSA backing panels to a wood-paneled wall, which typically consists of thin layers of wood and is not as load-bearing as solid wood?
I want to avoid the backing panels coming loose or the wardrobe wobbling. I might need different screws or an alternative fastening method. If anyone has experience with this exact combination of wood paneling and PLATSA backing panels, I would appreciate tips on the appropriate approach, including tools, types of screws, or even suggestions for using additional backing plates or reinforcements.

The back panels of PLATSA are usually attached with thin nails or small screws. For wooden panels, it’s best to use longer wood screws, about 3.5 x 30 mm (1/8 x 1 1/4 inches), to ensure a secure hold. Pre-drilling is definitely recommended to prevent the wood from splitting.

This way, you distribute the load better and the screws don’t just hold into thin material – making the whole construction more stable and less stressful.
A little extra stability that’s worth it because you won’t constantly worry the cabinet might eventually give way with a creak. 😉

The strips provide greater stability and the screws hold better.
If the back panel is intended only as a privacy screen and is not load-bearing, you can also try using strong double-sided mounting tape or hook-and-loop tape. This usually works well with wood panels and saves you from drilling. For more stability, however, screws are definitely better.

placing small wooden blocks or backing boards behind the back panelThanks, that sounds like a good idea! Do you have a recommendation on which type of wood is best for this? Does it have to be solid wood, or would a regular particle board also work?

I’m asking because the panels should not be hidden, but I want to keep it as discreet as possible. Is there a way to minimize the visual impact?
