trakaHello everyone, I am about to install my Ikea Pax drawers with soft-close dampers and have a few questions about the correct procedure. Specifically, I want to know how to properly attach the dampers so the drawers close smoothly and quietly without the mechanism jamming or shifting. I already have all the components: the drawers, the runners with integrated soft-close dampers, and the mounting hardware. What is the recommended assembly order? Are there specific screws that need to be tightened first, and exactly where do the dampers go? What are common mistakes to avoid during installation? I would appreciate some tips from experienced Pax owners to ensure everything is assembled cleanly and durably. Thanks in advance!
Installing the Ikea Pax drawers with soft-close mechanism requires careful attention, as the hardware is sensitive if the components are not perfectly aligned. It is important to first attach the runners correctly to the inside of the cabinet. Make sure they are aligned exactly parallel to each other; otherwise, the drawers may run crooked or get stuck. Next, install the dampers, which are usually located at the rear ends of the runners. These should be positioned so that they gently slow down the mechanism when the drawer is closing. Screw fasteners should only be fully tightened once the runners are properly positioned to avoid stress. A common mistake is attaching the dampers before mounting the runners, which often causes malfunctions. It is also helpful to check the drawer height with a spirit level after installation to ensure optimal function.
Hello traka, I understand that the soft-close unit can be a bit tricky. In general, I recommend following the Ikea assembly instructions step by step, as they include important details about the sequence. To explain a bit more: - First, attach the runners to the cabinet, with the thinner parts at the front. - Then prepare the drawer by connecting the side panels with the runners. - The soft-close dampers are usually small modules at the back of the runner; simply click them on so that the mechanism engages between the cabinet and the drawer. - After hanging the drawer, you need to test the soft-close function; if it feels stiff or closes too quickly, it’s best to check the alignment again. - Another important tip: when assembling, don’t overtighten the old screws, so the mechanism can settle in and nothing gets stuck. If you want, I can also provide the key measurement points to ensure the drawers run evenly.
Hey traka, I think these Pax soft-close dampers are like the finishing touch on the drawers – everything runs smoothly and quietly! The key is really to carefully check each component before you start assembling. The dampers are small wonders that prevent you from pinching your fingers later or having the cabinet rattle. Tip: When you hang the drawers, gently lift them slightly and then let go carefully to feel if the damping is working. And don’t worry if it’s not perfect the first time – it’s all part of the learning process! A bit of patience goes a long way. Oh, and always pay close attention to the orientation of the slides; the front and back fittings are different.

Well, in my opinion, they’re rather annoying components that start to lose their damping function after a few months. I really wonder how much sense this whole damping mechanism makes in an inexpensive piece of furniture. Without the damping, I would have skipped the whole setup, and the drawers would have worked just fine anyway. But maybe I’m just not the typical Ikea fan.
