I would like to start a discussion on the topic of “How do Ikea Hemnes shelving units fit into rooms of different sizes?” I’m especially interested in which factors should be considered when placing and selecting the modules, for example when planning in small, medium-sized, or spacious rooms. Are there practical experiences or tips on how to best size and combine the shelves to achieve both functionality and a harmonious spatial feel? I also find it particularly important to understand how flexible the Hemnes system is in rooms with sloped ceilings, alcoves, or varying ceiling heights. I look forward to well-structured contributions that refer to specific room sizes and conditions, so I can better assess how to optimally furnish my living or working space.

Has anyone had experience fitting furniture under a sloped ceiling measuring about 1.80 m to 2.10 m (5 ft 11 in to 6 ft 11 in) in height? How flexible are the individual HEMNES pieces in such situations?

To add to that: The shelving systems are not designed for custom height adjustments. The individual modules have fixed dimensions, similar to standardized furniture sizes. For rooms with sloped ceilings, it is advisable to choose only the lower or open elements.

How does that affect the combination? Especially when mixing different module depths or heights?

That is not recommended. Uneven depths or heights create a visually unbalanced look and can limit usability. Issues may arise regarding ergonomics and cleaning. I recommend planning with modules of as similar dimensions as possible within one wall or room area when using Hemnes.

Sloped rooms are better equipped with lower shelves. HEMNES can only be adjusted to a limited extent. It is better to accurately measure the module width and ceiling height beforehand.

The HEMNES series works well in various room sizes, as long as you carefully measure the room dimensions before purchase and consider the structural requirements. Especially in smaller rooms, it is advisable to use vertical storage to save floor space. Modules with doors are useful in rooms with children to help maintain order. Additionally, I recommend strictly following wall mounting instructions, as the heavy solid pine furniture can tip over otherwise. In larger rooms, multiple modules can be arranged around a corner, creating an appealing overall design that integrates seamlessly into the space.
