Hello everyone, I am currently planning to furnish my two boys' bedroom with the IKEA PLATSA system and have some questions. Has anyone had experience using PLATSA units effectively, especially regarding storage space, flexible layout, and how to make it age-appropriate and safe? I am considering combining both open and closed sections because I need storage for toys, books, and clothes. It is also important for me to know the best way to secure the modules, as young children often tend to be quite rough with furniture. Any ideas, including lighting or accessories that fit well with the system, are very welcome. Thanks in advance!

A desk and storage can be easily combined. Platsa adapts well to small spaces; just take measurements beforehand and select the modules accordingly. Don’t forget wall mounting.

In addition to the previous answers: When planning, you should also consider the children’s daily routine. If toys need to be easily accessible, open shelves are ideal – you can use baskets of different sizes there to keep things organized.

Regarding safety: Besides securing furniture to the wall, I recommend using additional safety measures, such as door locks, especially if small children are not yet able to close doors by themselves.

Another tip: Industrial protective films or scratch covers are useful for heavily used surfaces.

And even if it seems obvious, the correct placement of the shelf can make a big difference – make sure there is enough natural light and sufficient space for playing and learning.

Greetings!

PLATSA in the kids’ room can be really fun. From my experience: don’t just place shelves, but create small themed zones, for example a corner for books, a little crafting station in the desk area, and of course the big toy storage unit.

A small tip on the side – if you add small, fun magnets to the doors, kids might actually enjoy opening and closing the cabinets.

And yes, safety always comes first! But the system is also very durable, stable, and flexible. Good luck with the project!

Regarding the question of safety: I highly recommend securing the furniture to the wall and installing additional edge protection strips. Mixing open and closed compartments easily combines organization and accessibility. Plan desk modules separately to maintain flexibility.

Regarding safety: I also want to make the edges and doors childproof, you’re right about that. Additionally, I will secure everything firmly, but I’m still interested in the best way to do this (for example, to ensure stability if it gets bumped hard).

One final thought on this: If you not only attach the modules to the wall but also screw them together and add non-slip pads underneath, you can minimize wobbling. Before purchasing accessories, it’s worth checking which connecting brackets and reinforcements IKEA themselves offer—third-party suppliers sometimes also have sturdy retrofit solutions specifically for PLATSA.

Sometimes it’s also worthwhile to invest in padding or edge covers, especially in areas where children frequently walk by or play.

Good luck with your project, and if you want to refine your planning further, feel free to ask again with room dimensions and module details.
