ᐅ How can I set up IKEA Metod kitchen units in an ergonomically efficient way?

I
ignacioHello everyone,
I am currently planning the layout of my kitchen using Ikea Metod kitchen units and want to design it as ergonomically efficient as possible. My focus is not only on the overall appearance or workflow but especially on the optimal height of the countertops, sensible storage division, ergonomic placement of appliances (e.g., stove, sink, refrigerator), and the avoidance of unnecessary movements while cooking and working.
Specifically, I am interested in the following points:
- Which cabinet and countertop heights work best for an average height of around 175 cm (5 ft 9 in)?
- How should I plan the drawers and cabinets so that frequently used kitchen utensils are easily accessible?
- Are there any practical insights regarding the distance between the sink and stove within the Metod system’s flexibility?
- How can corner solutions with Metod be used optimally without creating ergonomic disadvantages?
I look forward to tips, suggestions, and especially practical experiences. Thanks in advance!

The ideal working height for people around 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) is usually about 90 cm (35 inches). This is easily achievable with Ikea Metod using the 80 cm (31.5 inches) cabinet body and a thick countertop.
For frequently used items, plan drawers below the countertop to avoid bending down.

Very interesting and comprehensive topic!
To work ergonomically with Ikea Metod kitchen units, you first need to carefully analyze body measurements. The standard working height for a person around 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) tall is usually between 89 and 93 cm (35 and 37 inches), depending on arm and hand position while working.
Ikea offers Metod cabinet boxes in different heights (60 cm, 80 cm, sometimes 40 cm), but for the countertop, the 80 cm (31.5 inches) cabinet box combined with a 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 inches) thick countertop is usually recommended. Note: oversized countertops increase the total height, so be sure to include this in your planning!
The drawer arrangement should be a combination of shallow cutlery drawers at the top and deep pull-outs for pots and food storage below. The so-called “work triangle” between the stove, sink, and refrigerator should be as compact as possible—ideally with side lengths of 1.2 to 1.5 m (4 to 5 ft).
Regarding the distance between sink and stove: 60–90 cm (24–35 inches) of workspace between them is ergonomically recommended to allow enough preparation space while avoiding excessive walking distances.
Corner solutions with Metod offer practical storage, but drawers there can often be hard to access because hinged doors and corner carousel units are less ergonomic. It’s worth considering special corner cabinets (for example with Magic Corner or swing-out pull-outs) in your plan.
I’d be interested to know if you already have the room dimensions and connection points? This way you can plan more specifically.

Based on my experience with Metod kitchens, I also recommend the following:
- Worktop depth: A depth of 60 cm (24 inches) is standard, but for more flexibility, 63–65 cm (25–26 inches) can be chosen.
- Height adjustment: If the standard height doesn’t fit perfectly, the feet of the base cabinets can be slightly adjusted to achieve ergonomic fine-tuning.
- Drawer organization: Dividers for cutlery and kitchen tools reduce search time and increase convenience.
- Appliances at ergonomic height: Place the oven preferably at eye level (e.g., in a tall cabinet) to avoid unnecessary bending.
I fully agree with the corner planning advice. It is best to start with a 90° corner cabinet with optimal pull-out systems; otherwise, comfort is significantly compromised.

It’s important to keep in mind that limited kitchen widths sometimes make a smaller distance necessary or unavoidable.
Also, Ikea Metod offers specific standard unit sizes that cannot be freely altered. It is often recommended to choose the nearest standard size and then adjust the arrangement of wall cabinets and countertop areas accordingly.
Has anyone here had experience with how much flexibility there really is with these dimensions without compromising the system?

Have any of you had experience with how much flexibility there really is with the dimensions without compromising the system? The Ikea Metod system does have standard dimensions (modular layout in 20 cm (8 inches) increments), and this should be taken into account.
While you can cut countertops with overhangs or adjust the plinth legs, the main cabinet carcass usually remains fixed in its measurements.
The flexibility is more in the number and arrangement of cabinets as well as combining tall cabinets with base cabinets. Those who plan carefully can also play with built-in appliances and specific cabinet fronts.
My advice: always buy cabinet carcasses in standard sizes and only customize the countertop measurements precisely; this way, you stay flexible and maintain optimal ergonomics.
