Good morning everyone,

I recently purchased an Ikea Brimnes bed and am now facing the task of securely attaching the back panel. The included screws and thin boards don’t seem very sturdy to me, and I want to avoid the back panel coming loose or causing problems later on, especially since the back panel also helps stabilize the overall structure.

My questions are: How can I securely and permanently attach the back panel on the Ikea Brimnes bed? Which screws or fixing methods have proven effective, possibly beyond the original fittings? Do I need to fasten the entire back panel surface, or is spot fastening sufficient?

If anyone has experience with reinforcement or alternative solutions, I would really appreciate any tips.

I enjoy assembling furniture myself, but when it comes to the stability of the back panel, I want to be absolutely sure to use the right approach.

It is best to attach the Brimnes back panel using the supplied screws. If you want extra stability, you can also install small angle brackets from the inside. Make sure the back panel is positioned flush and tightened securely. Usually, nothing more is needed.

Hey, good question! The original panel is actually quite thin, almost like cardboard. If you want it super stable, it helps to lightly spray adhesive on the panel and stick it to the frame beforehand, so it doesn’t wobble while screwing it in.

Then carefully insert the screws, and if you like, you can add small wooden strips inside at the corners. This gives the back panel a sort of backbone, like its own bodyguard team. 😄

This way, you get a secure connection and the bed becomes even more stable!

Basically, the back panel of the Ikea Brimnes is designed as a stabilizing component, but the thin particleboard can be easily damaged if screws are overtightened.

To ensure a secure attachment, I recommend the following approach:
- Use the original screws as instructed, but be careful to tighten them gently without overdoing it.
- Additionally, consider installing metal angle brackets in the inner corners of the bed frame, secured with short wood screws. These distribute the load and reduce stress on the back panel.
- If needed, a thin OSB or plywood panel can be glued onto the back panel for reinforcement. Before installation, adjust the panel to match the dimensions of the existing back panel.
- A full surface screwing is not strictly necessary; point-fixing at several sturdy points (edges and corners) is sufficient if the brackets are also installed.

A combination of fastening and reinforcement provides a durable and secure solution.

I understand your approach to securing the back panel as firmly as possible. Especially for a piece of furniture you use every day, it’s important that everything stays stable.

With my Brimnes bed, I initially had concerns about the back panel too – it really does seem quite thin. I assembled it using the original screws, but later added small brackets on the inside for extra reassurance. Since then, the bed feels much sturdier.

My advice is not to overthink it. Moderate reinforcement is usually enough to ensure long-lasting enjoyment of the furniture.

How do you feel about the tips so far? Are you aiming for maximum stability or a simpler solution?

I can definitely confirm that. I was worried that the back panel of my Brimnes bed might weaken over time. I solved this by adding small metal angle brackets on the inside.

Some people also secure the back panel with double-sided mounting tape to reduce vibrations.

I didn’t replace the original panels either, as they seemed thin, but combined with the brackets, the bed feels very sturdy.
