Hello everyone, I noticed that the back panel of my Ikea Besta shelving unit is damaged in several places. Specifically, there are cracks and slight dents in the MDF panel material that Ikea has used. Since I don’t want to replace the entire unit, I’m looking for ways to repair these damages without affecting the appearance or stability. Does anyone have experience with properly fixing back panels, for example using filler, putty, or plastics? Which tools or materials are particularly suitable for this? I would also appreciate tips on how to repaint or otherwise improve the appearance of the back panel. Thank you in advance for any specific advice!

A brief note on the color: Since Ikea Besta back panels are usually white or gray, the shade can vary significantly. It is recommended to choose a paint specifically designed for furniture or MDF surfaces that offers some flexibility.

Personally, I prefer using a matte acrylic paint because it not only adheres well but also remains durable during occasional cleaning. Before painting, light sanding after priming is essential to achieve a smooth finish.

One last question for you: Are you planning to repair the back panel only on the inside, or is it visible in your setup?

If it is visible, the finish becomes even more important.

Thank you for asking. Yes, the back panel is partially visible because my shelf unit stands freely in the room and remains open at the back. That’s why I really want to make sure it looks neat afterward. I will carefully follow the recommendations for filling, sanding, priming, and painting. I plan to glue the reinforcing strips on the inside – will that hold long term without the panel warping or the strips coming loose?

Using a high-quality mounting adhesive (hybrid adhesive) combined with reinforcing the back panel with the strips significantly improves stability. It is important to keep the surface clean, dry, and free of grease before bonding, and to press the strips firmly in place.

This adhesive remains slightly flexible, which helps to absorb stresses caused by temperature or humidity changes. This minimizes the risk of warping.

The repair should last for several years – I have successfully used this method multiple times myself.

That all sounds exciting! Just in case you haven't tried it yet: if you want to enhance the back panel a bit after the work, I can recommend water-based varnish or a matte clear coat – it provides a smooth surface and adds extra protection.

And yes, keep at it – perfect DIY moments always happen when you pay attention to the small details. Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
