Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to install Ikea Metod wall cabinets on a drywall. I am aware that drywall alone does not have the necessary load-bearing capacity to securely support such cabinets. Therefore, I am looking for the safest and most permanently stable mounting solution.
What fastening methods have you had the best experience with on drywall? Are there specific anchors, hollow wall anchors, or fixings that work particularly well? I would also like to know how you properly account for the weight of the wall cabinets to ensure the wall and fastenings hold securely.
Additionally, I am interested in whether it is best to drill into the wooden or metal studs behind the drywall, if accessible, or if there are alternatives when the studs cannot be precisely located.
I look forward to your tips and well-founded recommendations. Thanks in advance!

For drywall, I recommend using special metal hollow wall anchors, which you can easily insert into the drywall panel. If possible, always screw directly into the wooden or metal studs, as this is the most secure method.
Alternatively, so-called Fischer DUOPOWER anchors also work well, as they adjust flexibly. Used together with long screws, they provide a strong hold.

Izak35,
for mounting Ikea Metod wall cabinets on drywall, the following points are crucial:
- Drywall alone is not sufficient to support permanent loads. The most secure method is anchoring into the studs behind (wood or metal).
- To locate the studs, it is recommended to use a high-quality cable detector with stud detection or a stud finder.
- Attach the mounting rails or the cabinets directly using chipboard screws with a diameter of at least 6 mm (1/4 inch) into the studs.
- If studs are not accessible or not in a suitable position, metal hollow wall anchors designed for high load capacity can be used (e.g., metal toggle bolts). Plastic anchors are not suitable for heavy loads.
- Consider the weight of the cabinets plus contents: for Metod wall cabinets, expect at least 30–50 kg (66–110 lbs) per cabinet, so at least 3 strong mounting points per cabinet should be planned.
Conclusion: Anchoring into the studs has absolute priority; everything else is secondary. This will prevent the anchors from pulling out of the drywall.

I once installed a kitchen on drywall – my tip: Invest time in locating the studs, it will save you a lot of stress and trouble later on. If you only rely on the drywall board, it feels more like a house of cards. 😅
And if you then put some heavy pots on it, things could eventually turn dramatic. But with the right anchors and a stud as a base, it works perfectly.
Don’t worry, it will turn out great!

I would also like to know how you properly account for the weight of the wall cabinets to ensure that the wall and the mounting really hold.I asked myself the same question for a long time when I installed my Metod wall cabinet. Honestly, I was a bit unsure because I underestimated the drywall.
My advice: use stronger metal anchors or make sure not to skip finding the studs and screwing directly into them. I know it’s not always easy, but it significantly contributes to your safety.
And if you want to avoid the hassle, you could also consider attaching a simple wooden batten to the studs first and then fix the cabinets to that. This better distributes the weight and gives a more solid feel.
Of course, this involves a bit more work, but believe me, the safety is worth it.
I wish you much success and feel free to reach out if you have any specific problems!
