Hello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of my new IKEA Metod kitchen in my apartment, which has concrete walls. Since the Metod cabinets are quite solid and heavy, I want to make sure that the mounting to the concrete wall is really stable and durable.
Does anyone have experience with the best way to fix IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to concrete walls?
I have already thought about suitable anchors and screws but wonder if there are specific recommendations for types of anchors that work especially well with concrete, and if there are other important points to consider during installation to prevent damage to the cabinets or them coming loose.
I would also appreciate tips on the ideal drill bit size and whether any special preparation should be done before drilling.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I would like to know the exact condition of your wall (surface roughness, possible intermediate layers) to give better recommendations.Hello PLOMA,
thank you for your detailed feedback! The wall is actually a fairly smooth concrete wall, formed with formwork panels, without any additional cladding or plaster. Typical for new construction. The wall thickness is about 20 cm (8 inches).
I am likely going to use metal expansion anchors; I had considered chemical anchors, but that might be somewhat oversized for the load. For now, I am only installing wall cabinets and the base cabinet, all mounted closely together.
I want to ensure that no movement occurs over the coming years, especially due to the heavy kitchen appliances.
Do you have any experience with how anchors behave under temperature fluctuations and indoor humidity?
Thanks for all the input so far!

Do you have any experience with how anchors behave under temperature fluctuations and humidity in the room? That’s a very good question!
Metal expansion anchors are usually very resistant to temperature changes and moisture, but in areas with high humidity, such as kitchens, rust may develop, especially if the quality is not top-notch.
Therefore, I recommend:
- Using stainless steel or galvanized metal expansion anchors.
- In very damp rooms (e.g., without windows), chemical anchors with epoxy adhesive can be more reliable since they don’t undergo mechanical deformation.
It’s important that the screws are corrosion-resistant (e.g., stainless steel screws) to avoid future problems with rust or loosening.
Summary:
- For standard kitchens with ventilation, high-quality metal expansion anchors are sufficient.
- For high humidity, chemical anchors should be considered.
If you like, I can also provide you with more specific product recommendations.
Just a thought: Is the use of chemical anchors really necessary for standard concrete?
Many assume that chemical anchors are better, but often traditional metal expansion anchors work perfectly fine, provided the drill holes are carefully prepared.
Additionally, with chemical anchors, curing times must be considered, which can often cause delays, and the installation requires a bit more skill.
Regarding long-term durability, I also recommend paying attention to the quality of the screws and choosing the anchor type based on the specific load and wall condition, rather than automatically considering chemical anchors as the first choice.

I think this is a good point to raise: safety is important, but you shouldn’t let it cause unnecessary worry.
I also had concerns about the concrete wall at first, but after consulting with the staff at the home improvement store and doing some research, I used metal expanding anchors and am very satisfied.
What helped me was checking the anchors again before fully tightening and gradually tightening the screws in sequence – this helps distribute the forces more evenly.
Sometimes you might feel a bit uneasy before an installation like this, but with the right tools (hammer drill!) and good anchors, it works out great.
Stay patient and, above all, take it step by step!

Wow, there are already many great tips gathered here! I can only agree that blowing out the drill holes is an important step that many people overlook.
Choosing the right anchors is also crucial, not only for load capacity but also for everyday safety.
I recently mounted my Metod wall cabinets on concrete using heavy-duty anchors, and they are holding very firmly!
So: be confident when drilling, but please do it carefully! Your kitchen will thank you. 😄👌
