Hello everyone, I have been having issues with the door hinges on my IKEA PAX wardrobe for some time. Some of them are quite worn out, causing the doors not to close properly and even drag in some areas. Since I don’t want to replace the entire doors, my question is: How can I replace the worn hinges on an IKEA PAX wardrobe myself? Are there specific steps to pay special attention to, or any particular tools needed? I have already gone through the IKEA instructions, but these mostly cover assembly rather than replacing old parts. I am especially interested in how to carefully remove the old hinges, which replacement parts are suitable, and how to adjust the new ones so the doors close optimally. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hey, this sounds like a small DIY project! 😄 For PAX door hinges, these are basically the standard 35mm (1.4 inch) cabinet hinges that can be removed quite easily with a screwdriver. Here’s how:

- First, completely remove the doors. Usually, the hinges are attached to the cabinet with simple metal clips.
- Unscrew the old hinges from the inside of the cabinet.
- Purchase new hinges, typically available as replacement parts directly from IKEA.
- When fitting the new hinges, ensure they are properly seated and securely fasten the screws.
- Finally, fine-tune the door alignment using the adjustment screws so the doors close flush and without any gaps.

These are the basics – the key is not to strip the screws when removing them and to lay the doors down carefully during disassembly so they don’t get damaged. 😊

Additional information: IKEA PAX hinges typically use the standard clip-on hook hinge system. Removal is done in two steps:

- Lift the door off the cabinet by pressing down the metal insert at the base of the hinge.
- Then fully remove the mounting screws from the cabinet.

Tools:
- Phillips screwdriver (usually PH2 size is ideal).

Replacement:
- Replacement hinges must be the "35 mm cup hinge" type for PAX; IKEA offers these as original replacement parts.

Adjustment:
- The hinges usually have three adjustment options: horizontal, vertical, and depth.
- Use these adjustments after installation to align the door flush.

Special care is needed to avoid damaging the plastic parts of the hinges, as they are designed to flex when pressed but must not break.

Exactly! And if you enjoy it, you can also install the hinges using a small power drill, but be careful: you need a gentle touch to avoid stripping the screws. 😅

Here’s an extra tip from me: The installation is very convenient because you basically remove the door completely and then work on the hinges at your own pace. If you apply a bit of spray oil to the hinge mechanism at the very beginning of reassembly, they will stay smoother for longer, and any squeaking will disappear after a few days of use. 😊

So to summarize:
- Remove the door
- Unscrew the hinges
- Install the new ones
- Adjust
- Hang the door back and apply oil

Good luck with that!

The hinges on PAX are attached with clips. Remove the door, unscrew the hinges, screw on the new ones, and hang the door back on. A screwdriver is sufficient, nothing special. Adjust using the adjustment screws. Done.

Great question! I had the same issue a few months ago and had to replace my PAX door hinges. It’s such a relief when the doors close nicely again without sticking! 😃

I can only recommend being patient, especially when adjusting the new hinges. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get everything perfectly aligned. But it’s definitely worth it! And if you’re unsure, it’s better to use the screwdriver again rather than overtighten—otherwise, the holes in the cabinet body can get damaged.

If you use the hinges from IKEA, they are perfectly compatible and last a long time. Good luck and have fun with your project!
