Hello everyone, I have unfortunately noticed some unpleasant scratches on the cabinet fronts of my IKEA Metod kitchen, which are quite noticeable on the matte laminate. Since these are not simple surface scratches but affect coated panels with melamine resin, I am a bit unsure how to best repair these scratches without having to replace the entire front.

I am mainly interested in practical methods to treat small to medium scratches – DIY tips or products that actually work are very welcome. It is important to me that the repair becomes as invisible as possible and that the surface material is not damaged or softened.

Does anyone have experience with these types of coatings on IKEA Metod cabinets, and what approach has worked well for you? Thanks for any helpful advice and recommendations!

For minor scratches, furniture polish or a repair marker matching the color works well. For larger scratches, you can gently sand the area with fine sandpaper and then touch it up with an appropriate paint pen.

To thoroughly and sustainably repair scratches on IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets, it is important to first consider the type of material used. The cabinet fronts typically have a melamine resin surface, which is highly scratch-resistant but can be problematic with deeper gouges.

My approach is as follows:

- First, carefully clean the damaged area to remove any grease or dirt.
- Then, fill small scratches with a special repair wax or a color-matched touch-up pen that matches the shade of the front panel.
- For deeper gouges or worn surface areas, I recommend gently sanding only the affected spot with very fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 800 to 1000) to avoid damaging the surrounding surface.
- Afterward, apply a thin layer of clear varnish or a specialized furniture protective lacquer using a small brush to protect the repaired area.

It is important not to use chemical solvents, as these can dissolve the melamine resin layer. Do you have the exact color number or model of your cabinet fronts? Then I could provide precise recommendations for suitable repair materials.

That is correct; the melamine resin coating is very durable, but repairs need to be carried out carefully. The general guidelines are:

- Avoid using aggressive chemicals or solvents.
- For minor scratches, color-matched waxes or pastes are often sufficient.
- For deeper damage, the repaired area should be sealed, ideally with a clear coat compatible with the material.

It is important to use repair products specifically designed for laminated surfaces. Testing on inconspicuous areas helps prevent unwanted reactions.

Thank you for the tip. I have already tried furniture polish, but it only helps a little with slightly deeper scratches.

The fronts are matte white, model "VOXTORP" from IKEA, 60 x 80 cm (24 x 31.5 inches). The scratches are mostly superficial, but some are small indentations.

Would it be better to apply the repair wax at the edge of the scratch or directly into the groove? Are there specific techniques for application and smoothing afterward that can make the repair less visible?

I’m also considering a finishing step with clear varnish – can you confirm if that’s advisable, or should it be avoided with melamine resin? Thanks for any further advice!
