Hello everyone,
I have a rather specific question for you: How do you repair Ikea Hemnes furniture that has been damaged by water? Specifically, I’m talking about pieces made of solid pine, some of which have a lacquer finish. The furniture is swollen in one or two spots, the surface is wavy, and the lacquer has peeled off in some areas. I’m interested in the best steps to make the damaged spots usable again or to restore them in an aesthetically pleasing way.
My main question is whether sanding and repainting can bring the furniture back to good condition or if you often need to use special repair methods like wood filler, putty, or even replacing entire parts. I’d also appreciate any tips on how to minimize damage when treating the furniture with common household products.
Thanks in advance for any advice and your experiences!

I understand your situation well and would like to give you a simple step-by-step guide for repairing the Hemnes furniture after water damage:
- First: Let the furniture dry completely – often better to air dry rather than use artificial heat to avoid warping.
- Sanding: Gently sand the swollen areas with fine sandpaper (grit 180-220) until the surface is even again.
- Filling: If there are dents or missing parts, you can use wood filler (preferably water-based, since the furniture material is pine).
- Painting: After filling and drying, sand lightly again with a fine sanding sponge. Then apply a primer, followed by a carefully chosen clear coat or acrylic paint.
Tips:
- Make sure to let the surface cure well afterwards.
- Use thin layers when painting and allow each layer to dry completely.
If you proceed carefully, this is definitely manageable and not very costly. Good luck!

Hey Jorusin, that water damage sounds really frustrating! 😕
I totally agree with that. And if the wood is still soft, wait a bit longer until it has hardened.
That’s really important, otherwise the new paint won’t stick.
Take your time, repairing a piece of furniture like this isn’t rocket science, but it does require care. Good luck with the repair – the Hemnes furniture is really nice, so it’s definitely worth it!

One important point to always consider with water damage to wooden furniture is: How deep has the moisture penetrated? If the swelling of the wood is only superficial, sanding and coating are usually sufficient. However, with deeper damage, the stability can be affected.
Some only perform cosmetic repairs, but this can compromise long-term usability. So if load-bearing parts are involved, it’s worth taking a closer look before relying solely on filler and paint.
Additionally, there are special water-repellent treatments available after the repair that reduce the risk of repeat damage. This should be taken into account.

I would like to add that with Ikea furniture like Hemnes, the surface is often more of a protective layer – the solid pine wood underneath is quite sturdy if properly treated.
It is advisable, especially for light-colored paints, to use special furniture paints that offer flexibility. Simple clear coats can easily develop cracks on wood that still contains slight moisture.
Also, after sanding, thoroughly remove dust particles, preferably with a damp cloth or a specialized vacuum attachment, to ensure the paint adheres well.
Good luck!
