Hello everyone,
I am planning to install the Ikea Pax wardrobe at my home and am concerned about potential moisture damage because the location is near the kitchen and somewhat unheated.
My specific question is: How can I best protect the Ikea Pax against moisture damage so that the furniture remains stable over time without mold growth or material deformation, even with slightly higher humidity levels?
Perhaps this can be managed with structural measures or suitable protective treatments. I would especially appreciate practical advice, for example on placement, sealing, or appropriate care products to make the wardrobe as resistant as possible.
Thank you in advance!

Interior: Moisture absorbers or silica gel packets in the closet help reduce humidity.

I want to emphasize this point, as moisture tends to accumulate in rooms that are used less frequently, without a way to escape.
I have had positive experiences with reusable dehumidifiers that can be placed inside closets. These are more environmentally friendly and cost-effective over time compared to chemical packets.
Additionally, it’s advisable not to overfill closets to allow for proper air circulation inside.

- Tip: Occasionally cleaning the back panel and underside is good prevention against dirt and moisture.

In summary, I would recommend using these small aids as a supplement to structural measures.

Hello everyone,
an additional thought on moisture protection for Ikea Pax:

To protect not only the furniture surface but also the inside panels and connectors, I recommend using moisture-resistant sealing tape strips in the cabinet joints. These prevent moisture from entering sensitive connection points.
Also, make sure the cabinet is assembled perfectly level and does not lean, as groundwater could otherwise collect at lower points, which promotes water damage.

Ventilation is best managed with short but intensive opening periods of the cabinet doors – this benefits not only the cabinet but also the clothes inside.

One more note: Under no circumstances should the cabinet be completely covered with plastic sheets or sealed airtight – this causes moisture to build up inside.

A few additional considerations:

To supplement Filippo’s points, here is a very detailed procedure for prevention:

1. Pre-treatment: Apply a high-quality wood sealer or clear polyurethane varnish to all visible edges of the Pax beforehand. The coating thickness is important; apply neither too thin nor too thick to avoid cracking.
2. Installation: Place the cabinet on furniture glides or plastic pads that keep moisture away from the floor.
3. Back panel: Use a special water-repellent back panel film, which can be fixed with double-sided tape – this protects against condensation on the wall side.
4. Promote air circulation by making small ventilation slots at the top and bottom of the back panel (e.g., using a fret saw) — this ensures natural air exchange.
5. Monitor humidity: A simple hygrometer in the room is useful to keep track of moisture levels.

If all these points are followed, the risk of moisture damage to the Pax is significantly reduced. Of course, this is a rather elaborate procedure, but especially recommended for exposed locations, as described by JUNA53.
