Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Metod kitchen with the standard countertops from the series and would like to know: How can I best protect these kitchen countertops against permanent stains? I’m referring to everyday situations like red wine, oil, fruit juice, or food stains that often leave unpleasant discolorations. Are there any special cleaning products, sealants, or general care tips I should follow to keep the surface looking flawless in the long term? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello nenoan, your question about protecting IKEA Metod kitchen countertops from permanent stains is very valid, as the surfaces are unfortunately not always as durable as one would like.

Basically, I recommend the following approach in three steps:
- Regular cleaning: Use a mild dish soap and warm water for daily cleaning. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or acidic products.
- Immediate stain removal: Stains like red wine, fruit juices, or oil should be wiped off immediately to prevent absorption or drying.
- Sealing and maintenance: For countertops made of coated wood or laminate, there are special care oils or sealants that can be applied regularly. These create a protective layer and prevent liquids from penetrating.

Also, please avoid placing boiling hot pots directly on the countertop, as this can cause permanent surface damage.

I have to disagree! It’s not that simple with IKEA Metod panels. They don’t have a highly durable surface that’s easy to clean. Wiping them quickly helps, but the surface is not comparable to, for example, granite or quartz.

In my experience, you either have to invest in more expensive countertops or accept that such stains will leave permanent discoloration. Attempts to seal the surface with oils are often a waste or can even cause more damage if they aren’t specifically designed for laminate or melamine.

In addition to the points already mentioned: IKEA Metod countertops are generally made of melamine-coated particleboard or a similar material. This means that while the surface is fairly resistant to mechanical damage, it is not completely waterproof against liquid penetration.

To prevent stains in the long term, I recommend the following detailed approach:

- Choose a suitable cleaning product designed for melamine-coated countertops – specialized laminate care products are available from professional suppliers.
- After cleaning, thoroughly dry the surface with a soft cloth to avoid residual moisture that can promote staining.
- For existing discolorations, try treating a test area with diluted isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), but use it cautiously and not too often.
- Avoid standing liquids and use cutting boards and protective mats to minimize direct contact between the surface and spilled substances.
- If you plan to seal the countertop yourself, be careful. Some oils or wax products can seep through and actually worsen staining.

In conclusion: If you are not satisfied with this type of countertop, considering a switch to a more durable surface might be worthwhile.

My tip: Use a cutting board for everything, even for foods that don’t stain easily. Wipe off red wine and oil immediately. Do not place hot pots directly on it. This will help it stay in good condition longer.

It is also very important to enjoy the maintenance! If you regularly wipe down your Metod panel with a mild cleaning agent and warm water, it will really benefit from that. And don’t worry about small stains; often you can gently treat them with a paste made from baking soda and water. Just don’t give up—that effort pays off! Your kitchen will thank you!
