Hello everyone,

I have the following question: How can I protect Billy from moisture, especially in damp environments like basements or with occasional water contact? It is a wooden structure/furniture piece that I want to preserve long-term. It is important to me that the protection is reliable against both short-term wetness (e.g., splashes) and consistently high humidity. Which materials, techniques, or preventive measures would you recommend? I want to avoid the wood swelling, molding, or being damaged. I would appreciate practical tips and experiences!

Oils and waxes provide a more durable and flexible protective layer here.

Thanks for the detailed information! In a direct comparison: does a hard wax oil allow more permeability to moisture than a two-component (2K) varnish, or is the difference negligible? I’m asking because the wood should still be able to “breathe” without swelling. I’m concerned that a varnish might protect but also trap moisture in the wood or block the diffusion process. Are there any measurements or practical experience that confirm this?

Based on my experience and specialist literature:

Hardwax oils are more porous than varnishes, meaning they allow moisture to pass through in a controlled way, so the wood can “breathe.” This prevents moisture from being trapped and causing mold. Two-component (2K) varnishes, on the other hand, create an almost impermeable protective layer, but small damages can allow moisture to penetrate locally, leading to damage.

For furniture like Billy, which is placed in damp areas, the flexibility of hardwax oil is usually advantageous. Ideally, the treatment should be renewed regularly to maintain protection. This is the approach I recommend.

It's really exciting to see so many good tips coming together here! I was skeptical at first, but after treating my wooden shelf with hard wax oil, it clearly showed: protection and appearance go hand in hand 🙂

Don't forget: if the shelf gets wet, wipe it off quickly, otherwise moisture damage will appear. And every now and then, apply some maintenance oil – it's really not much effort but makes a big difference.

I love projects like this because you can achieve a lot with relatively little effort! Let’s all keep our shelves dry!!! ;-)
