Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Billy shelves from IKEA, which I have been using for several years. Unfortunately, some shelves and side panels have burn marks, likely caused by hot cups or sticky liquids that were left there for a while. The surface is melamine-coated, which in my opinion makes cleaning a bit more challenging, as I want to avoid using any products that could damage the surface.

Does anyone have experience with the proper and, above all, gentle cleaning of Billy shelves? What methods or products can be recommended to remove such burn marks without damaging the melamine coating or causing the surface to become dull?

I would appreciate detailed tips, including advice on pre-treatment and aftercare. Thanks in advance!

I usually use a vinegar and water solution (1:1) with a soft cloth for stains that cannot be removed with soap. Afterwards, immediately wipe again with clean water. Do not use a melamine sponge on sensitive areas! It is better to clean more frequently to prevent stains from setting.

Good morning, as a precaution: use mats or placemats on open shelving when placing hot items on them.

If stains are already present, you can try a baking soda paste (baking soda + water) and gently rub it in, then wipe off quickly. Baking soda is mild and often helps with organic stains.

As always, test first in a hidden area to ensure the surface can tolerate it.

Best regards!

Hello everyone 🙂
I think there’s no need to worry too much about stains on BILLY – a few signs of use actually show that the shelf is lived in and being used, right?

But if you really want to tackle them: first clean with warm soapy water, then gently scrub with a melamine or microfiber sponge. Make sure to dry it regularly in between. Avoid strong chemicals, as they can sometimes dull the surface.

After cleaning, enhance the appearance with some furniture wax or polish – this always works well for me and also makes the shelf more durable.

Good luck, and don’t be too hard on your furniture 😉
