Hello everyone, I currently have several IKEA Besta cabinets that I use as media furniture. However, I have the problem that the doors on the hinges often slam or sometimes squeak when closing or even with slight movement. This is not only annoying but also looks low quality when the doors don’t close smoothly.

I have already tried adjusting the hinges, but I feel there should be more that can be done, especially to prevent the doors from rattling when they are just lightly touched or due to vibrations. Does anyone have tips or tricks on how to permanently stop the doors of IKEA Besta from slamming or squeaking?

I am particularly interested in details about proper adjustment, possible maintenance of the hinges, or whether special rubber buffers or lubricants are recommended. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Hello ixman43, I am familiar with your issue with the Besta doors – this is actually a common problem that can often be improved with some tools and tricks.

Regarding slamming and squeaking, it helps first to properly adjust the hinges. IKEA Besta models usually use standard hinges with adjustment screws, allowing you to align almost any door precisely. You can adjust them along three axes:

- sideways (to align the gaps neatly),
- vertically (to prevent the door from rubbing at the bottom),
- and in depth (to adjust the closing angle).

If the doors still slam, you can attach small rubber dampers to the hinges. These are often available as accessories, for example called "soft-close adapters," which simply clip onto the hinges to prevent door slamming by cushioning the impact.

For squeaking, I recommend using an appropriate lubricant, but not WD-40, as it tends to attract dirt. Instead, silicone spray or special lubricating grease for furniture fittings works well. This prevents the hinges from drying out and producing squeaking noises.

Make sure to apply the lubricant sparingly to avoid residue on your furniture. On most Besta doors, the lubrication point at the hinge spring is easily accessible.

If you like, I can also provide some example steps for adjusting the hinges.

Exactly, first check the alignment of the doors, especially the height and depth.

Rubber pads are definitely recommended; there are also soft silicone stoppers available.

Alternatively, graphite powder can be used, as it is dry and does not attract dirt.

I find it remarkable how everyone focuses on trying to solve the problem with some kind of "soft-close adapters" or lubricants. IKEA deliberately installed the simplest version, which is naturally the cheapest.

Why not upgrade directly? There are professional damping hinges available for Besta that completely eliminate slamming and allow for smooth, quiet closing. Of course, they cost more, but anyone who wants long-term peace should consider investing in them.

Also, I wonder if constantly lubricating the hinges might cause problems over time, as it attracts dirt and dust. I find drier solutions with rubber buffers much more practical.

Sometimes it’s just better to replace the original hinges with better alternatives instead of constantly trying to fix things with temporary measures.

Exactly, readjusting is the first and most important step! Here are a few tips:

- Use a small Phillips screwdriver to make adjustments to the lateral, vertical, and depth settings. Sometimes the hinges are well adjusted after installation, but over months they can shift slightly.

- Also check that the screws on the hinges are tight. Loose screws can cause rattling and noise.

- For squeaking: silicone spray works best as it lubricates without attracting dirt. Simply spray a few bursts on the visible pivot points, then open and close the door several times.

- To prevent the door from slamming, small self-adhesive rubber bumpers or felt pads on the inside of cabinet doors have proven effective. These are applied at the edges of the frame or behind the doors where contact occurs.

- If that’s not enough, as theota suggests, hinges with a soft-close feature are worth considering. You can replace the hinges completely with these.

I would first clean and properly adjust the mechanical parts and apply lubricant, then add the rubber bumpers and see if that makes a difference.
