Hello everyone, a few weeks ago I bought an Ikea Metod kitchen base cabinet and am now facing the challenge of using the space inside these base cabinets as efficiently as possible. The cabinets come with standard drawers, but I find it especially difficult to make the best use of the deep and tall drawers.

I am particularly interested in tips and tricks on how to maximize both vertical and horizontal space—whether through additional inserts, organizers, or clever system components. I am also wondering how to store items that are rarely used in a way that doesn’t waste space.

Does anyone have practical experience or specific recommendations for maximizing storage capacity in Ikea Metod base cabinets? I look forward to your advice and to hearing which solutions have worked well for you!

Use storage boxes in various sizes to group small items.

Rotating inserts help make better use of space in corner cabinets.

Stackable dividers or drawer inserts are especially practical for vertical space organization.

For optimal space utilization in Ikea Metod base cabinets, I recommend first categorizing storage items according to how often they are used.

- Frequently used items in easily accessible drawers or pull-outs
- Infrequently used utensils in deeper areas or larger containers at the cabinet base

Using adjustable drawer inserts made of metal or plastic allows for a customized arrangement of compartment sizes and improves overall organization.

Additionally, extra shelves—if the cabinet height permits—offer the possibility to divide the vertical space into two levels, creating additional storage capacity.

Be cautious with stacking items too high, as this can quickly lead to instability or make quick access more difficult.

That’s exactly where the frustration begins! Ikea supplies these standardized drawer slides, which, in my opinion, often create more obstacles than benefits. Instead of efficient space utilization, you often end up with a uniform drawer structure that hardly meets individual needs.

Why not think outside the box? I mean, who says a cabinet has to be rigid? For example, you could install modular shelves with adjustable heights or use custom inserts. Even better: why not replace some of the drawers with open shelving inside the base cabinet to allow for more flexible storage?

You shouldn’t hesitate to question the Ikea standard in order to truly optimize the available space.

Hello! Absolutely! I rely on these partitions and small stackable boxes that you can simply place in, take out, and quickly rearrange when the kitchen setup changes.

A bit of creativity helps here – repurposed tin cans or attractive plastic containers often fit well and also add a personal touch to the kitchen. 😊

If you love your Ikea Metod base cabinet, give something back to it – with a few dollars invested in good organizers, the multifunctional storage becomes a real comfort zone!
