Hello everyone,

I am planning to install Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets on a drywall partition but am unsure about the best and safest way to do this. The wall consists of standard drywall panels fixed to a wooden frame, and I want to avoid anchoring the cabinets in a way that doesn’t provide a secure hold. I’m particularly interested in which mounting methods and fasteners are ideal for drywall to ensure sufficient load capacity. Are there special anchors, or could additional support elements like mounting rails be used? Any details on wall preparation or insights regarding the Ikea assembly instructions would also be very helpful.

Do you have experience or tips on what to pay special attention to in order to hang the cabinets securely without risking damage to the wall?

Thanks in advance!

Hello pule44,

When installing Ikea Metod cabinets on drywall, the most important requirement is to support the load not only through the drywall but also against the underlying load-bearing structures. Here is a structured approach:

- Identify the wall framework (wood studs or metal profiles)
- Use special cavity or toggle anchors if direct fastening to the wooden studs is not possible
- Ideally, attach the cabinet mounting rail directly to the wood studs or to an additional crossbeam that is securely screwed in
- Avoid fastening solely with drywall anchors, as they can only support light loads (approximately 10–15 kg max (22–33 lbs))
- Alternatively, you can fix a sturdy plywood board to the wall, on which the cabinets are then mounted

Also, check the combined weight of the cabinets plus contents and plan accordingly. Ikea provides mounting hardware, but it must be matched to the wall conditions.

Best regards.

You cannot attach Metod cabinets directly to drywall. Locate wooden beams behind the panel and screw into them. If none are available, install a wooden batten and then mount the rail onto that.

Hello pule44,

I can confirm Lorukeo’s advice and would like to add a brief guide:

1. Check the wall framework: Use a stud finder or magnet to locate the wooden or metal studs.
2. If you find wooden studs, make sure to screw directly into them. The Ikea Metod rails are designed for direct screw attachment.
3. If the spacing between studs is too wide (normally 60cm (24 inches)), it is recommended to screw at least one additional horizontal batten made of 18mm (0.7 inch) plywood or similar material to the wall, on which you then mount the cabinet.
4. Make sure to use sufficient and high-quality anchors or screws for the respective materials (for wood, use 5mm (0.2 inch) chipboard screws at least 60mm (2.4 inches) long; for metal studs, use special screws).
5. Be very careful when using anchors directly in drywall: the load capacity is very limited due to the material structure. It is better not to rely solely on drywall anchors for heavy loads.

This way, the load is transferred onto sturdy material and the cabinets will hold safely in the long term.

I completely understand how frustrating it can be when you want to install a kitchen securely – but the support isn’t right. It really helped me to consult a carpenter beforehand to find out exactly how the wooden frame behind the drywall is constructed. At first, I was also worried that adding extra battens to the wall might be too much effort. But actually, it makes a difference because they ensure the cabinets have a really stable fit.

I also found it important to be very careful when installing the mounting rails and to fix them with appropriate screws (at least 5 x 60 mm (0.2 x 2.4 inches)). The safety during kitchen use is definitely worth it.

If you’re unsure about how load-bearing your wall is, it’s a good idea to get someone experienced with wood construction and fastenings to help. It’s simply more comfortable when you don’t have to constantly worry about something falling down.

Exercise great caution when directly anchoring into drywall: its load-bearing capacity is very limited due to the material structure.

This is exactly the critical point. Many underestimate that even heavy Metod cabinets with filled interiors generate significant weight. Mounting solely on drywall anchors can quickly lead to material failure.

I always recommend either exposing the underlying framework or installing an additional layer of OSB or plywood to create a secure base. Attach the panels with sufficiently long anchors and screws. Then fasten the cabinet mounting rail to the panel, not just to the drywall.

Although this is somewhat more labor-intensive, it saves on later repair costs and unpleasant surprises.
