Hello everyone, I am currently trying to decide how to measure the correct height for the countertops of my Ikea Metod kitchen. I know that the standard countertop height is often around 90 cm (35 inches), but considering different body heights and usage scenarios, I wonder which criteria should really be applied.

Is there a simple but reliable method to determine the optimal working height that also explains exactly where to measure? For example, how should factors like varying leg lengths or the types of frequent tasks (chopping, cooking, washing) be taken into account?

Perhaps someone here has experience with Ikea Metod, especially regarding the different plinth heights and how much the countertops should be installed above the base cabinets to ensure proper ergonomics.

I would really appreciate detailed tips, including advice on what to definitely avoid!

This is always an interesting question for me, especially since it’s often unclear whether the height is set correctly. I’ve learned that the ideal working height is roughly at elbow level when standing relaxed with your arms bent at about 90 degrees.

For my own Ikea Metod kitchen, I hesitated at first, but then I took the top edge of the base cabinets plus the toe kick height and added the countertop thickness to see if that felt right. Especially if you are taller or shorter, a difference of a few centimeters (inches) can make working very comfortable or quite uncomfortable.

Sometimes it feels like the height is specified rather theoretically, but in everyday use it really needs to be adjusted personally.

So, to save you the trouble of trial and error: stand relaxed against a wall, bend your arms, measure from the floor to your elbows with a tape measure, then subtract about 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) for movement clearance — this usually gives a good reference for the countertop surface height.

It’s also important to consider how you will use the surface. If you often cut or knead, the countertop should be a bit higher; for heavier work, lower is better.

Have you already measured your standing elbow height?

I would like to add a precise clarification here, as there are some technical details to consider regarding the height of Ikea Metod countertops.

The working height should actually be adjusted individually to your body height. The general rule of thumb is that the optimal height is about 5 cm (2 inches) below your elbow level when you stand relaxed with your arms bent.

This is a good practical tip.

For Ikea Metod, it is also important to plan the base cabinets with a plinth approximately 8 cm (3 inches) high, with the countertop placed on top. The standard height of base cabinet plus plinth and countertop is usually around 91 cm (36 inches).

This means: If your calculation of elbow height plus adjustment of 3-5 cm (1-2 inches) deviates significantly from this value, you should adjust the plinth height or countertop thickness accordingly during installation.

Additionally, I recommend positioning the countertop temporarily before final fixing to try out the height. Only then will you really notice if it feels comfortable, especially for longer tasks.

The countertop height is primarily based on elbow height. Consider the typical tasks: lighter tasks are better at a higher height, heavier tasks at a lower one. Leg length is not very important since the measurement is taken at the standing height of the countertop edge, not the legs.

You can adjust the plinth height of the base cabinets if needed to achieve the desired overall height.
