Hello everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations on how to generally make Ikea Malm beds more stable. I’ve noticed that the base frame and support beams start to creak with heavier use or when sitting on the edge of the bed, and sometimes allow a bit of wobbling.

Are there any proven methods to reinforce the bed frame without changing its appearance? Also, I’m interested in whether there are special fastening techniques or additional components that can be added to make the entire bed sturdier, especially for the common sizes 140 x 200 cm (55 x 79 inches) or 160 x 200 cm (63 x 79 inches).

Thanks in advance for your help!

Install 2 additional metal brackets at the joints to provide immediate stabilization.

Applying wood glue at the connections also helps to seal the joints and reduce creaking.

One of the main reasons for instability in Malm beds is the design of the central support beam and its attachment.

Recommendation: Reinforce the central support beam with a cross slat made of solid hardwood, which is screwed lengthwise underneath the bed slats.

I can confirm this; brackets provide additional support.

Additionally, it is advisable to replace the wood screws with longer and thicker ones to ensure a firmer connection. This helps prevent wobbling under heavier loads.

I can easily understand how annoying the creaking and uncertainty can be with a piece of furniture that is otherwise so popular.

You are not alone with this issue – I experienced similar problems with my Malm bed. What helped me was adding small rubber pads to the corners of the bed frame, which absorb some of the pressure and prevent unwanted movement.

I can fully support this advice. I tried this kind of reinforcement myself, and it actually reduced the wobbling.

Keep at it – a bed should provide stability, not frustration. 🙂

Another option: Attach an aluminum angle profile under the center of the bed frame, which significantly increases its stiffness.

Sometimes this alone is enough to make the entire bed frame more stable.
