Hello everyone, about a year ago I bought an IKEA Malm bed and have been using it regularly since then. However, for the past few weeks, I have noticed that the bed squeaks quite a bit when turning or moving, which is somewhat annoying. I’m wondering if this is normal for Malm beds or if it could be due to material fatigue or assembly errors. The squeaking usually comes from around the joints between the frame and the slatted bed base, and it happens regardless of the time of day or humidity. Has anyone had similar experiences? Are there any proven methods to fix the squeaking? Thanks in advance for your feedback and tips!
Hey Sinsar, it’s great to see you here! It’s actually quite common for Malm beds to start squeaking after a while. :-) Usually, it’s because the joints loosen from use. My advice: just tighten all the screws and connections once again! That helped me right away. If you want, you can also try applying some wax or special furniture oil to the joints – that reduces friction and the annoying squeaking. Don’t give up; these small issues are easy to fix! Good luck!
Hello Sinsar, I would like to organize my response a bit, as this issue occurs quite often.
1. Cause: As Khalil already mentioned, screws tend to loosen over time. This is the most common reason.
2. Material fatigue: Wood or MDF can warp slightly over time, creating tension and causing noises.
3. Assembly: If the construction was not done exactly according to the instructions, parts may be under pressure and generate sounds.
Tips to prevent squeaking:
- Systematically tighten all screws, including those that may not be immediately visible
- Use felt pads or small pieces of foam rubber at contact points between wood
- Apply wax sticks (e.g., beeswax) specifically to the threads
- Check that the slatted frame is seated firmly and evenly
If you are interested, I can provide more details on how to fix it!

Regarding the squeaking of Malm beds, the following can be noted: The construction consists of MDF components, which combined with screws and metal connectors can produce noise during movement under load. The squeaking is caused by friction between fixed and moving parts, usually at connection points.
A long-term solution involves checking all screws, cleaning the connections, and if necessary, applying a thin layer of wax or silicone oil. Replacing damaged connectors can also be helpful. The warranty period should be considered in case of material fatigue.

Simply tighten all the screws properly. This is definitely the most important step. I would add that when tightening, it is important not to overtighten the screws to avoid damaging the material. Additionally, it can be useful to check them again after a few weeks, as wood or MDF components may expand or contract slightly due to temperature changes.
