Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Brimnes furniture and now I’m wondering how to properly maintain the hinges to keep them smooth and functional for a long time.

Specifically, I’m interested in the best methods for cleaning, lubricating, and any regular maintenance steps needed for these hinges.

Should I use special lubricants, or is standard oil sufficient? Are there any products to avoid in order not to damage the material? It would also be helpful to know if the hinges need to be removed for cleaning or if they can be cleaned while still attached to the furniture.

I hope you have some experience with this, as the durability of my new furniture is really important to me. Thanks in advance!

Hello kilipar,

First of all, a warm welcome to the forum! Regarding your question about maintaining the IKEA BRIMNES hinges, I’d like to provide a detailed answer, as the topic is somewhat more complex than it might first appear.

When it comes to furniture fittings in general, including the hinges of the BRIMNES series, the most important actions are regular cleaning and proper lubrication. Dust and dirt can accumulate in the hinges and affect their movement. Therefore, you should clean the hinges from time to time with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

For lubrication, I recommend a thin, food-grade silicone or graphite oil. Conventional machine oils or WD-40 are often the first choice but can cause stains on wooden surfaces or damage rubber/plastic parts. Spray oils or droplet applicators work well, but please use them sparingly and apply only to the moving metal parts.

The most important thing: You do not need to remove the hinges to maintain them. Simply open the door slightly so you can access the hinges, then carefully clean and lubricate them. A small brush with fine bristles or a spray nozzle often helps to apply the lubricant precisely where needed.

Although hinges for regular home use are generally robust, these measures can help keep them operating smoothly for much longer and prevent unpleasant squeaking.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

This is a very important point. Additionally, I would like to note that the hinges of the BRIMNES series are typically made of galvanized steel, sometimes with plastic components.

Galvanized metal parts can react with certain lubricants, especially if they are acidic – although this is rarely the case with common products.

I recommend testing any lubricant on an inconspicuous spot beforehand, if possible. Ideally, use a lubricant that does not leave any residue on wood or painted surfaces.

Mechanical maintenance is also an important aspect: If the hinges are squeaking or the door is difficult to move, adjusting them with a suitable screwdriver can help. IKEA hinges usually have adjustable screws, allowing for precise readjustment.

The type of hinge used in BRIMNES (mostly overlay or concealed hinges) makes lubrication and adjustment relatively straightforward.

In my experience, regular light machine oil is completely adequate, as long as it is applied sparingly and the oil does not get into wood joints or onto visible surfaces.

For my BRIMNES furniture at home, I usually need to maintain the hinges every six to nine months because they occasionally squeak slightly.

To apply, I carefully open the doors, use a cotton swab to apply small amounts of oil to the moving parts, let the oil soak in briefly, and then immediately wipe off any excess oil. This prevents unsightly oil stains, which are especially unpleasant on the white BRIMNES series.

If the hinges are not maintained, this can lead to increased wear on the fittings, which negatively affects their durability over time. So: better to be careful and maintain regularly than to neglect and cause wear!

Otherwise, there is no need to remove the hinges, as accessibility is well designed.

Brief and to the point:

- Clean hinges from dust with a dry cloth.
- Use light oil (e.g., sewing machine oil).
- Apply oil directly to the metal parts.
- Use only a small amount to avoid stains on the wood.
- Do not use WD-40 or penetrating oil, as these can damage plastic.
- Hinges do not need to be removed.

Done!
