Hello everyone,

I recently installed the Ikea Platsa system and am generally satisfied, but I’ve noticed that the door hinges are squeaking a bit and don’t move as smoothly as they did at first. Since I value a long lifespan for my furniture and would prefer not to order replacement parts right away, I would like to know how to properly and effectively maintain the door hinges on the Ikea Platsa.

Specifically, I’m interested in the following points:
- Which lubricant is best suited (oil, grease, silicone spray, etc.)?
- Are there any special techniques to keep in mind when lubricating to ensure optimal function?
- How often should this maintenance ideally be performed?
- Is it necessary to remove the hinges for maintenance, or can they be serviced directly while still attached to the furniture?

I look forward to your tips and experiences to help solve this issue for good.

Just use a little silicone spray and apply it to the hinges. Open and close the doors slightly while spraying to ensure the spray spreads evenly. Usually, once a year is sufficient. Removing the doors is not necessary.

Hello Lenkin,

Regarding your question about maintaining the door hinges on Ikea Platsa units, I would like to provide a more detailed explanation, as most hinges in these systems are generally made of metal with plastic components and therefore require special care.

- Lubricants: I recommend a high-quality, light silicone oil or a special PTFE (Teflon) spray. These do not leave sticky residues that can attract dirt, which can happen with conventional greases or thicker oils. I would use WD-40 more for cleaning purposes; it is not ideal as a long-term lubricant.

- Application technique: You should fully open the doors and then spray the lubricant directly onto the moving parts of the hinges. After that, open and close the doors slowly several times to allow the lubricant to penetrate all the small gaps. It is important not to apply too much, as excess will drip and attract dust.

- Maintenance frequency: Depending on usage, I recommend reapplying every 6 to 12 months. If creaking occurs more frequently or soon after maintenance, check the hinges every 3 to 4 months.

- Removal: Usually, removal is not necessary unless a hinge is damaged or stuck.

I hope this detailed guide helps you. Some small details are often overlooked but can cause the hinges to wear out prematurely.

I completely agree. I find it ridiculous how many people just spray some multifunctional product on as if it were a miracle cure.

However, isn’t it a bit much to lubricate hinges constantly? Shouldn’t furniture show a bit of “wear and tear”? Sometimes I get caught up in this endless maintenance mindset, as if I have to protect my doors in a sterile bubble. Especially IKEA furniture is designed to be practical and functional, not to stay “perfect” forever.

Still, if you want to prevent squeaking noises, regular—but not excessive—oil application is definitely useful. You could almost say that too much care is sometimes just hypersensitivity toward something that hardly bothers anyone.
