ᐅ How can I remove dents from a Billy bookcase?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my white Billy shelf from Ikea. Unfortunately, one of the shelves has a dent, probably caused by a heavy object pressing on the surface. The dent is fairly shallow and is located on the melamine-faced particleboard surface. My question is: Is there a way to smooth out this dent without taking the entire shelf apart or completely replacing the surface?

I’m aware of the method using steam on solid wood to raise the fibers, but does that work on Billy shelves, which are essentially particleboard with a foil coating? I’d prefer not to go through the hassle of replacing parts or throwing away the shelf.

Does anyone have experience with this or tips on how to remove dents from this type of surface? Thanks in advance!

How large and deep is the dent exactly\

Good question! The dent is about 2 cm (0.8 inches) in diameter, rather shallow but noticeable. I estimate the depth to be 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 inches).

I like that idea; I would need to check how well it matches in color.

Thanks to everyone else for the tips as well! I definitely want to try the putty technique first, as it seems like the most practical approach.

That would of course be the easiest solution; I just need to see if it fits within the budget.

That definitely sounds repairable!
If you use filler, make sure to apply several thin layers and let each one dry thoroughly.

Carefully sand between layers to achieve a smooth, even surface.

Finally, you can treat the shelf piece with furniture varnish or spray paint to match the color and gloss level as closely as possible to the original.

If the finish becomes too glossy, you can lightly dull the surface with a very fine sanding pad.

Go ahead!
If you’re unsure, try it first on an inconspicuous area.

Good luck!
