Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my white Billy shelf from Ikea. Unfortunately, one of the shelves has a dent, probably caused by a heavy object pressing on the surface. The dent is fairly shallow and is located on the melamine-faced particleboard surface. My question is: Is there a way to smooth out this dent without taking the entire shelf apart or completely replacing the surface?

I’m aware of the method using steam on solid wood to raise the fibers, but does that work on Billy shelves, which are essentially particleboard with a foil coating? I’d prefer not to go through the hassle of replacing parts or throwing away the shelf.

Does anyone have experience with this or tips on how to remove dents from this type of surface? Thanks in advance!

Hi, with melamine-coated particle boards, often only replacement or repair helps.

Pushing out a dent with steam won’t work because the laminate doesn’t tolerate it.

You can try to level the dent slightly with filler and then cover the surface with paint or self-adhesive film.

Hello Sileo,

I completely understand your concern; the Billy shelf unit is popular with many, and you don’t want to just throw it away. Your assessment regarding moisture is correct – engineered wood panels don’t behave like solid wood because the melamine coating is water-resistant and inflexible.

One option, as Greglau mentioned, is to fill the dent with a furniture repair filler. You apply the filler thinly, allow it to dry thoroughly, sand it carefully, and then finish with a suitable paint or a veneer film.

Alternatively, there are so-called repair markers designed specifically for furniture surfaces. They do a good job hiding minor scratches, but larger dents won’t fully disappear with them.

If the damage isn’t too big, I think the filler method is the most practical for permanent furniture like Billy. Maybe one more tip: test the materials first on an inconspicuous spot to see how well they adhere.

Hey Sileo 😊,

I know your struggle with those small dents! The good news is: nobody likes full shelves getting ruined 😉

I once had a similar annoying dent that I simply filled with modeling paste and then smoothed with fine sandpaper before repainting. Using matching paint, and boom – no one could see a thing.

If you like, you can also nicely cover it with a decorative film – it looks modern and is quick to do. So don’t worry, there’s always a solution 🙂

I can confirm that using water vapor with melamine boards doesn’t work; it doesn’t help, except maybe causing bubbles.

For dents in Billy shelves, repairing with filler and then applying paint is the best method.

There might also be suitable replacement shelves available at Ikea for a reasonable price.

Hello Sileo,

let me get a bit more technical so you can fully consider your options:

Your Billy shelf is made of particleboard coated with melamine resin. This resin forms a hard but brittle surface that hardly springs back when a dent occurs. The usual method with steam, which works on solid wood fibers, causes the wood fibers to swell from the moisture and pushes the dent out.

However, with melamine resin, you cannot affect the surface using steam because this layer is sealed and does not absorb moisture. This means that if you try to apply steam, it may rather cause the surface to peel off or form unsightly bubbles.

Therefore, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Lightly sand the edges of the dent with very fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 320) to smooth any loose edges.
2. Use an acrylic or furniture filler specifically designed for such applications. Apply it in layers with a small putty knife.
3. After it has dried, check for evenness and use very fine sandpaper to level the surface.
4. Finally, apply a suitable paint, ideally melamine-based or a color-matched furniture paint.

If the surface is heavily damaged or the dent is large, you can also order replacement shelves from Ikea.

One additional question: How big and deep is the dent exactly, and can you relieve the affected area from normal use until the repair has fully cured? These are important details for the repair time and final quality.
