Hello everyone,

I have noticed that the doors of my Billy bookshelf have started squeaking recently when I open or close them. It’s quite annoying and usually indicates an issue with the hinges. My question is: How can I effectively and permanently fix the squeaking of the hinges on the Billy doors? What household remedies or special lubricants are best suited for this? Do I need to remove the hinges to do this, or is it sufficient to treat them while they are still in place? And is there anything I should be careful about to prevent the doors from sticking or getting damaged?

I would really appreciate any helpful, practical tips or experiences dealing with this exact problem.

I know that well, it’s really annoying. I had a similar problem recently, and what helped me was first thoroughly cleaning the hinges. Dirt or dust often builds up there, which combined with moisture causes the squeaking. After that, I used silicone spray, which doesn’t attract as much dirt and maintains the metal parts well.

I didn’t remove the hinges myself; I just opened the door panel slightly and sprayed the lubricant from the outside onto the joints. You need to operate the door a few times so that it gets everywhere. That way, I was able to significantly reduce the squeaking.

If it still squeaks, I would also check whether the screws are tight. Loose hinges can also cause noise.

I’m curious if you can manage it the same way. I know how annoying it is.

Clean the hinge, then apply lubricant (silicone spray or graphite powder). Use only a small amount to avoid attracting dirt. Hinges do not necessarily need to be removed.

In addition to the previously mentioned tips: It can be helpful to degrease the hinges with a dry cloth after cleaning, before applying lubricant.

It is important to spray the lubricant precisely into the joints to ensure the metal moves smoothly again. For butt hinges, I recommend silicone spray or a specialized furniture oil. Avoid using greasy products like WD-40 permanently, as they attract dust and can worsen the problem over time.

If the squeaking persists despite lubrication and cleaning, check whether the hinges are properly aligned and not bent, as this can cause mechanical friction.

Removing the hinges is not absolutely necessary but can make thorough cleaning easier if you have the necessary tools. Screws should always be checked for appropriate tightness, as loose fastenings can also cause noise.

Absolutely correct, cleaning is the first step.

I would like to add that using a lint-free cloth and possibly some thinner can be helpful for removing old residues and hardened grease. After that, I recommend applying a high-quality silicone spray to the hinges, which also protects against corrosion and keeps the moving parts smooth.

Attaching and removing the doors on Billy shelving units is usually straightforward, making it easier to treat the hinges. If unsure, you can lift the doors upwards with a bit of force.

Please be careful to avoid leaving excess residues on the sides of the shelving or the floor after treatment—silicone can make surfaces slippery.

If the squeaking persists despite all this, the hinge pins may be worn out. In that case, replacing the hinges is often the only solution.
