Hello everyone,

I have the following problem with a drawer from the IKEA BESTÅ system: The drawer is warped or no longer slides smoothly on the runners. It sticks on one side and can only be pulled out with a lot of force. The frame and the carcass appear to be straight; it obviously only affects the front or the drawer box itself. I am interested in how to fix a warped drawer in the IKEA BESTÅ system without having to buy a completely new one. Are there any effective methods to straighten the wood or particleboard? Are there any adjustments on the runners that I should check before attempting any repairs? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello Folkmarb30,

your question is very relevant and practical, especially since particleboard is often used in BESTÅ units, which can warp due to moisture or stress. Here is my step-by-step suggestion:

- First, check the drawer slides. BESTÅ typically uses metal tracks with plastic rollers that are adjustable on the side. Inspect if any screw is loose or if the track itself is twisted.
- If the drawer sticks on one side, try removing the drawer completely and carefully examine the cabinet body to see if the frame is flat. A slightly warped cabinet part can affect drawer movement.
- To straighten the front or the drawer box: pure particleboard unfortunately has low elasticity and cannot tolerate major deformations. If the warping is minor, you can try applying slight moisture (e.g., a damp cloth on the back) and then clamp the drawer into a straight shape (for example, using a straight strip as a guide) so the material can dry in a flat position. However, this method has its limitations!
- Important: Do not apply excessive force, as the particleboard core is brittle.
- Alternatively, replacing the front panel (IKEA replacement parts) might be a reasonable solution if the issue is purely cosmetic.

One more question: In which direction is your drawer warped? Top/bottom or sideways? And how old is the BESTÅ unit or how long has the problem existed? This helps to better assess the age of the material and any moisture-related effects.

Make sure to check that the rollers on the tracks run smoothly and are not blocked. Sometimes, readjusting the screws on the sides can also help the drawer fit better again.

Hello Folkmarb30,

I want to address the practical side because I have encountered this issue several times with BESTÅ myself. When a drawer is warped, it is often due to the back panel or the sides swelling slightly from moisture.

- First: remove the drawer completely and inspect the inside. Check for any signs of moisture or small bulges.
- If the front panel is only slightly warped, you can spray the back with a damp cloth and then gently clamp the drawer into a straight shape (for example, between two furniture slats) until it dries.
- If the distortion is more severe, replacing the front panel is usually the only realistic and recommended solution.
- Also, check whether the drawer slides are properly installed and whether the adjustment screws on the slide mechanism are loose or the rollers are damaged.

In my experience, this has often helped with minor warping.

If you want, I can also explain how to mechanically readjust the slides—the adjustment options on BESTÅ are somewhat hidden.

Good luck!

The approach is generally sensible. Here are some additional technical tips:

- Drawers in BESTÅ units are modular, and the slides have adjustment screws that allow fine-tuning both vertically and horizontally. This can help compensate for minor distortions.
- If the front panel is warped but the cabinet remains straight, it is worth removing the front to check for any exposure to moisture or signs of material deformation.
- Another option: you can use sandpaper to gently smooth any slightly rough edges on the affected part of the drawer, which may prevent it from sticking.
- For more severe warping, replacement is recommended: IKEA offers individual parts as spares, even for older models.

If you have exact measurements or model numbers, I can provide more specific adjustment instructions.

It sounds like your drawer might have a slight bend! 😅

The best approach is to remove the drawer completely and give it a little care: gently moisten it and then press it into shape while it dries, as Filippo and benon have already suggested.

Sometimes even small tricks are enough: a little sanding, slight adjustment—and if nothing works, consider getting a new front. And hey, no one will mind if you take some time to care for your drawer.

Remember: drawers are just like people—well, almost.
