Hello everyone, I am facing the challenge of installing Ikea Metod cabinets in a relatively small kitchen and using the space efficiently. The available area is limited, so standard layouts hardly fit, and I want to avoid wasting space by simply lining up the units. What strategies are there to optimize the design and use of the Metod series so that storage is maximized despite tight conditions, without making the space impractical? I am especially interested in how to best plan and combine the individual cabinet modules to allow flexibility for different room situations — also looking for ideas on special modifications or tricks to organize the available space effectively.

In summary, the approach can be structured as follows:

- Precise measurement of the room, taking into account utilities, door openings, and window positions.
- Determination of the optimal cabinet depth (37cm (15 inches) is the shallower option, which may be better for smaller kitchens).
- Planning using all available module sizes from Metod (20, 40, and 60 cm (8, 16, and 24 inches) widths are available).
- Use of special solutions such as corner carousel units or drawer inserts to maximize storage space in challenging locations.
- Consideration of whether tall cabinets are practical, as they provide substantial storage on a small footprint but may visually crowd the space.
- Attention to accessibility and ergonomics in the layout.

It is also recommended to use Ikea’s own planning tools to simulate different configurations and find the solution best suited for the specific room.

Interesting how quickly everyone jumps to the classic corner solutions. But what if the room doesn’t even have a proper corner?

Good point. That’s why I specifically asked about the exact room layout and recommended choosing the modules accordingly. Without a true corner, it is still possible to create angles using individual cabinets or plinths to make optimal use of the space.

Additionally:
- Flexible use of open shelving in unusual spots can quickly provide extra storage.
- Custom-made solutions are an option but usually cost significantly more.
- Metod can still be adapted well with some tricks, for example by using smaller modules or shortened versions.

Mertvin, could you please specify your room situation with some basic measurements? That would help to assess potential solutions more accurately.

One additional idea: try planning the cabinets not only based on storage volume but also according to frequency of use. Items used frequently should be placed at easily accessible heights or in pull-out drawers. Infrequently used items can be stored higher up or further back.

Using multifunctional cabinets also helps, for example with hinged doors that are easier to open in tight spaces, or with internal drawers to avoid having to pull out entire cabinets.

Summary in 3 steps:
- Measure the space and plan movement clearances
- Choose cabinet widths and depths accordingly
- Prioritize interior fittings based on ease of use

I’m happy to help if you provide the measurements.
