Hello everyone, I recently purchased the IKEA Platsa system and am now facing the challenge of choosing the right screws for assembly. Since the basic screws included in the package are often not ideal for certain connections, I want to make sure I use the correct screws to ensure stability and durability. My specific question is: Which types and sizes of screws are recommended for the various components of Platsa, especially for wall mounting and connecting the individual modules together? Additionally, I am interested in whether there are specific materials or coatings to look out for that provide rust protection or generally better durability. I would appreciate detailed tips, practical experience, or advice on common issues that are often overlooked in everyday use.

Hey, that’s a good question! With PLATSA, it’s important to always use screws suitable for the specific application. For wall mounting, I personally use wall plugs with screws that have good load-bearing capacity—at least 6 mm diameter (about 1/4 inch) and around 60 mm length (about 2 3/8 inches). For connecting the modules, typical chipboard screws around 4 to 5 mm diameter (about 5/32 to 3/16 inch) work well, depending on where you need them. By the way, galvanized screws are your friend—they resist rust better and last longer. So, practical and durable! A little tip: sometimes it’s worth using stainless steel screws if the furniture will be in damp rooms or if you want to be extra safe.

Yes, you are correct. Galvanized screws are especially effective for rust protection because they have a protective layer that prevents corrosion. Alternatively, stainless steel screws are ideal, particularly if you are installing in a more humid room or if the furniture might be moved at some point – this helps to avoid rust damage in the long term.

For wall mounting, you should use long screws along with suitable wall anchors that are appropriate for your wall type (e.g., cavity anchors for drywall). For the modules themselves, chipboard screws with wood threads are the best choice, as they do not damage the material but still provide sufficient hold.

To answer the question in detail, it is important to first identify the different stresses on the individual screw connections in PLATSA. For wall mounting, it is essential that the screws not only have the correct length but also the appropriate thread profile and a sufficient diameter to safely support the weight of the fully loaded furniture.

- For concrete or solid walls, I recommend high-strength anchors with screws of at least 6 mm diameter and a length of at least 70 mm (3 inches) to ensure deep anchoring in the masonry.
- For drywall, cavity anchors with correspondingly longer screws are important, as otherwise the furniture may slip over time.

For connecting the PLATSA modules to each other, chipboard screws sized 4 x 40 mm (5/32 x 1 5/8 inches) are suitable because they have a strong thread and a self-drilling head. Ideal screws have a galvanized coating for rust protection; alternatively, stainless steel screws with A2 quality are recommended.

One possible pitfall: The screws should not be too long, as this can cause the furniture veneer to split. Countersunk head screws are also recommended because they sit flush with the wood and do not damage the surface.

Finally, a tip: If you plan to disassemble the furniture frequently, special connector elements such as cam locks or Minifix systems are suitable, which IKEA also offers for PLATSA in some cases.

For wall mounting, always use screws with anchors suitable for the wall type (e.g., nylon anchors for concrete, cavity anchors for drywall). For the panel connections, 4x40 mm (1.5x1.6 inch) chipboard screws are common. Galvanized screws are preferable to prevent rust.

Great topic! I was also unsure until I received the following tip: When choosing the wall mounting kit, be sure to prioritize quality – cheap screws and anchors can jeopardize all your work! For assembling the modules, I used stainless steel Spax screws that you can find at hardware stores, and I can only say: extremely sturdy and they look good too 🙂

For everyone who wants something durable – it’s better to invest once, so you have peace of mind for a long time and can be proud of your PLATSA!
