NeoavniHello everyone, I am currently faced with the task of gently cleaning the fronts of my Ikea Metod kitchen, which are made of real wood. I want to make sure that the surface is not damaged—neither by harsh cleaning agents nor by mechanical stress. Therefore, I am interested in which methods and cleaning products are best suited to effectively remove dust, grease, and fingerprints from solid wood fronts without affecting the wood grain or finish. Are there any specific care instructions from Ikea or proven home remedies you would recommend? Additionally, tips for proper everyday cleaning to maintain the wood in the long term would be very helpful.

Cleaning should preferably be done with a soft, slightly dampened microfiber cloth—mechanical abrasion should be avoided to prevent scratches. For grease stains, diluted mild dish soap added to water has proven effective. As a general rule, never use strongly alkaline or abrasive products, as these can damage the surface. It is especially important to dry the fronts thoroughly afterward, since wood is sensitive to moisture and can swell. Ikea itself recommends regular care with a suitable wood care oil to protect the wood from drying out and dirt.

Another tip: if you use water, it should be lukewarm, never hot. Hot liquids can cause the wood to swell or damage the surface finish. Also, I recommend not rubbing the fronts directly with a sponge or cloth that is too wet. Excess moisture is always critical for solid wood fronts. To protect against everyday wear and tear, it is also advisable to treat the fronts every few months with suitable wood oil or wax, which seals the surface and preserves it naturally.
It’s interesting how many people immediately turn to specialty products. The main point, however, is to avoid overdoing it.
I would even go further: often, simply wiping dry with a microfiber cloth is enough. Grease usually remains barely noticeable this way.
Excessive exposure to liquids or too frequent oiling can actually damage the wood. The wood needs to breathe – and if you care for it too much, it can quickly look shiny and artificial.
In my opinion, the saying "less is more" applies especially well to real wood surfaces. Overdoing it risks ruining the natural appearance of the fronts.

Those who overdo it risk altering the natural appearance of the fronts. That’s an interesting thought. My main goal is to preserve the wood character and avoid distorting the surface through excessive maintenance or causing it to swell from too much moisture.
Are there any recommendations on how often wood care oil should ideally be applied? Also, I wonder if the Ikea real wood fronts come pre-oiled or lacquered from the factory, and how that affects the cleaning and maintenance routine.
I also want to ensure that the chosen care method won’t conflict with later use of water or soap. If anyone has reliable information from IKEA sources, that would be helpful as well.

Also, I wonder whether the Ikea real wood fronts are already treated with oil or lacquer at the factory and how this affects the cleaning and maintenance process?Ikea Metod real wood fronts are usually factory-treated with either oil or lacquer, depending on the model. This means they already have a protective finish, so applying oil care daily or weekly is not necessary. Suitable maintenance with wood oil or wax every few months, approximately every 6 to 12 months, helps to preserve and refresh the surface.
For cleaning, a damp microfiber cloth with a very mild detergent is sufficient. Avoid using harsh cleaners that could damage the protective layer. Lacquered surfaces are more resistant to moisture and stains than oiled wood but still should not be cleaned with strong chemicals.
In case of doubt, Ikea recommends checking the care instructions for the specific front type and using special care products designed specifically for wood fronts.
