Hello everyone, I have bought new doors for my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet fronts because the old hinges no longer work properly. My specific question is: How can I professionally replace the IKEA Metod door hinges myself without damaging the doors or the cabinet frame? I am currently using the standard cup hinges but want to make sure I follow all necessary steps during disassembly and reassembly, as the hinges can be quite tight. Are there any special tools I should use or particular tricks to release the hinges and reinstall them correctly? It would also be helpful to know if fine adjustment is needed after replacement and how to best carry that out. Thanks in advance!
Hey, this is a great topic because many people underestimate the hinges on IKEA Metod doors! 😀 I’ve done this several times and can only say: you can do it! First, it’s important to carefully remove the doors. The hinges have small levers or clips that you need to press. If they’re really tight, gently pry them open with a flat-head screwdriver, but don’t use too much force, or you might damage the door or the hinge.
For the replacement itself, you only need a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws that attach the hinges to the cabinet frame and the door. After installing the new hinges, make sure to tighten all screws firmly, but avoid overtightening.
And yes, definitely perform a fine adjustment after installation! The hinges have small adjustment screws that allow you to align the door vertically, horizontally, and in depth. This way, you can perfectly position your door, otherwise it might stick or not close properly.
Good luck, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions! You’ve got this! 😊👍

1. First, carefully unhinge the door. As mentioned, Metod hinges have a quick-release function. Press the small lever or clip on the back of the hinge. If the hinges are very tight, it is advisable to first loosen the mounting screws to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the clips.
2. Tools: A Phillips screwdriver (PH2) is the main tool. Ikea hinges typically use Phillips-head screws.
3. Disassembly: After releasing the clip, the hinges can be easily removed from the door and the cabinet. Make sure to also loosen the screws on the cabinet side if you want to replace the entire hinge.
4. Installing the new hinges: First, screw them onto the cabinet, then attach the door and press the lever back until the hinge clicks into place.
5. Adjustment: Metod hinges offer 3- or 4-way adjustment options (usually 3):
- Horizontal (side to side)
- Vertical (up and down)
- Depth (between cabinet and door)
By turning the adjustment screws on the hinge, you can align very precisely. I recommend loosening all screws first, positioning the door, and then tightening the screws.
One more tip: Use a spirit level if you want perfect alignment, and work in a calm environment to avoid any misalignment.
Do you already have a specific hinge type in mind, or do you know if your doors have special dimensions? That would help me give you a more precise procedure.

Do you already have a specific type of hinge in mind, or do you know if your doors have any special dimensions?Thank you for the very detailed information, Dilen. Yes, I have standard Metod doors with the original 110° cup hinges. The doors are 60x80 cm (24x31.5 inches), standard thickness.
So far, I have only half-heartedly tried removing the doors by pressing the clips, which is why your tip about loosening the screws beforehand caught my attention. To be honest, I didn’t want to unscrew the screws right away because I thought it wouldn’t necessarily make it easier.
It’s good to know that you should first loosen the hinge on the cabinet side to make the lever easier to operate. Is there a specific sequence where you first remove the door and then the hinge from the cabinet side, or vice versa? Or does it not matter?
I really want to apply as little force as possible to the fastenings to avoid any damage or warping.
Does anyone also know if the adjustment screws on the hinges can become stiff over time? Mine are a bit tough to turn.

Is there a specific order for first removing the door and then the hinge from the cabinet, or the other way around?Always remove the door first. Press the clips, pull the door forward, and take it off. Then loosen the screws from the hinge on the cabinet. This way, you avoid unnecessary pressure on the clips and the door.

A drop of oil (WD-40 or sewing machine oil) on the screw usually helpsCorrect. However, I recommend using only minimal amounts and avoiding permanently lubricating products. This prevents dust from sticking and avoids long-term jamming of the hinge.
To summarize the procedure:
- Remove the door by pressing the quick-release clips
- Loosen the hinge mounting screws on the cabinet
- Remove the hinge and install the new one
- First, attach the lock screws to the cabinet, then hang the door and snap the clips back in place
- Fine-tune the door alignment using the hinge adjustment screws
When tightening the screws, be careful not to exceed a torque of about 1.2 to 1.5 Nm (10.6 to 13.3 in-lb) to avoid damaging the material.
If the stiffness problem occurs frequently, replacing the hinges might be a good long-term solution. IKEA offers original replacement parts that are compatible.
If you have any further questions on this topic or about the fine adjustment, I’m happy to help.
