Hello everyone, I have a few Malm furniture pieces from Ikea with wood veneer and would like to enjoy them for a long time. Since I read that wood veneer is quite delicate and its care differs from that of solid wood, I am looking for specific tips and recommendations on proper cleaning and maintenance. I am especially interested in advice on suitable cleaning products, care oils, or waxes that do not damage the veneer or cause stains. How do you handle cloths (damp/dry, cotton or microfiber), and how often should the furniture ideally be maintained? I want to avoid the veneer peeling off or becoming dull. Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

A damp, well-wrung cotton cloth is ideal for regular cleaning. For maintenance, I recommend a special care oil without silicones, and avoid waxes, as they can create an unpleasant film. It is important that the veneer does not become too wet to prevent delamination. Care every 3-4 months is usually sufficient to keep the surface protected and maintained. Stains should be removed as quickly as possible using clean water and gentle pressure, to prevent any residues from setting into the wood.

Also, it should be considered that some maintenance oils are solvent-based and can cause the veneer to swell or discolor. Does anyone have reliable experience with specific products for Ikea Malm? Not everything recommended by timber suppliers is suitable for veneered furniture.

Microfiber can pick up dust more effectively, but if it is too coarse or new, it may cause micro-damage.
Regarding care oils, I agree: use only products without harsh solvents. Pure plant oils or special furniture oils for veneers are recommended. Products containing silicones or waxes are simply unsuitable, as they can dull the finish over time.
As an addition: For veneered furniture like Malm, the protective layer is usually a thin varnish, not a genuine oil finish. This means you should assume the veneer is relatively delicate and avoid mechanical stress.
Cleaning: A slightly damp cotton cloth with a bit of mild dish soap is fine, followed by drying with a clean cloth.
Maintenance: There are special furniture care products for veneered surfaces (e.g., Butcherglanz furniture care). These contain moisture protection and create a light protective layer without damaging the veneer.
A tip: Always test new products on an inconspicuous area to rule out any color changes.
Incorrect care or excessive moisture can cause the veneer to peel – so you need to be very careful.
