Hello everyone, I have a few Malm furniture pieces from Ikea with wood veneer and would like to enjoy them for a long time. Since I read that wood veneer is quite delicate and its care differs from that of solid wood, I am looking for specific tips and recommendations on proper cleaning and maintenance. I am especially interested in advice on suitable cleaning products, care oils, or waxes that do not damage the veneer or cause stains. How do you handle cloths (damp/dry, cotton or microfiber), and how often should the furniture ideally be maintained? I want to avoid the veneer peeling off or becoming dull. Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

I love my Malm cabinets and regularly give them a little care treatment :-)

In my experience, it’s enough to wipe them down gently and occasionally apply a drop of mild oil (I use vegetable oil, very sparingly) on a cloth and then rub it in very gently. Important: Not too much – otherwise it becomes sticky!

And yes, microfiber cloths work too, as long as they are soft and not too wet. Extra tip: Never spray directly onto the veneer, always spray onto the cloth.

This way, the furniture stays fresh and shiny for a long time.

I agree with that. Direct contact with liquids can weaken the adhesion of the veneer. Therefore, it’s better to use cleaning and care products sparingly.

It would also be interesting to know the ideal indoor climate conditions to prevent the veneer from drying out or swelling. Especially for furniture placed near heating sources, care alone is often not enough.
