Hello everyone,

I am planning to upgrade my kitchen with an Ikea Metod kitchen island. I want to focus especially on a combination of ample storage space and a generous work surface, so that the island is not only practical but also well-suited for food preparation. My question is:

How can I best build Ikea Metod kitchen islands to maximize storage space with drawers or cabinets while also providing a sturdy, easy-to-maintain work surface? Are there any special tips for assembly or planning that I should keep in mind if the island is going to be freestanding?

I have also been thinking about how to best prevent the island from slipping and whether it makes sense to add extra reinforcements, as I plan to use it intensively in the future.

I would greatly appreciate detailed advice on material choices, planning the base units, worktops, and any helpful assembly tips—especially any points to watch for with the Metod system.

Thank you in advance!

Hello biti52,

First of all, thank you for your well-structured question about building an Ikea Metod kitchen island. I appreciate such precise inquiries because they really help with focused planning.

Here are a few basic points to keep in mind if you want to integrate storage and workspace:

- The Metod cabinets are modular and are usually installed floor-standing. For an island, it is essential that it stands firmly on all sides since you want access from every direction. This means omitting the typical backs you know from cabinet rows and instead attaching sturdy side panels.

- Avoid stabilizing the back of the island only with thin metal sheets. I have had good experiences using custom-made HDF or plywood panels as backs, securely screwed and glued. This prevents wobbling.

- For the countertop, a robust and moisture-resistant material is advisable, such as solid wood, granite, quartz, or at least a thick laminate surface. Although Ikea also offers Metod countertops, I recommend sourcing from external suppliers for heavy use.

- The countertop must be firmly attached to the carcasses, ideally with clamps and special mounting brackets. Keep in mind that materials may expand or contract slightly due to temperature and humidity changes.

How do I optimally build Ikea Metod kitchen islands so that there is both plenty of storage space with drawers or cabinets and a stable, low-maintenance work surface?

Regarding storage:
- Choose drawer widths thoughtfully; wider drawers offer more capacity but are heavier and more prone to sticking.
- Use internal pull-outs and organization systems—especially in the island, where it can be tricky to reach everything easily.

Regarding slipping or movement:
- Ikea offers special adjustable feet with rubber soles, which are essential, especially on smooth floors.
- If necessary, add a base plate under the island to better distribute weight and prevent the feet from sinking into the floor.

Regarding assembly itself:
- Always work with a second person.
- Carefully inspect each part for damage or warping before assembly.
- Check the exact positioning of drawer runners ahead of time.

If you like, I can put together a material list or an assembly guide for you—you’ll notice it gets quite extensive ;-)

What is the approximate planned size of your island and what is the layout of your kitchen area? Then I can offer tips on the layout.

Hi biti52,

It’s really great that you want to use IKEA Metod to build a kitchen island! 🙂 The combination of storage space and work surface is what makes the island perfect—the real jackpot in the kitchen, right?

A quick tip from me: The countertop is basically the crowning feature of your island—this is not the place to cut corners. If you choose laminate, give it some care with high-quality edge banding to prevent water damage right away. And if you go for wood or granite: Oh yeah, that’s fun! It’s a bit more maintenance, but it looks amazing!

I can only agree with that. The feet are crucial not only for the stability of the island but also to keep your countertop perfectly level so you don’t run into problems while cutting.

I would also recommend paying close attention to the position of the sink or cooktop if you plan to include them in your kitchen island—and carefully plan the water and electrical connections, as these are often the tricky points.

And hey—make sure to have some fun while building it. 🙂 There’s always a bit of risk, but with some planning, you’ll handle it easily!

To build the island stable and practical, make sure the carcasses are very well connected. Use the supplied Ikea connectors carefully and, if needed, reinforce them with metal brackets.

For storage, tall drawers under the countertop are especially useful—they hold a lot and are easily accessible.

Countertops should be attached with strong screws, preferably using spacers so the material can expand without causing damage to the top or the carcass.

Important: The work surface must remain free from loads that could affect the construction or the island’s legs. For freestanding islands, also ensure good floor drainage and, if necessary, an anti-slip system under the legs.

If you want, I can also provide a short checklist for screws, tools, and materials.
