Hello everyone, I want to convert my IKEA Besta shelving unit into a multifunctional piece of furniture with adjustable compartments. Specifically, I’m looking for advice on how to arrange the shelf sections so that I can later combine doors, drawers, and open or closed compartments in a flexible way—ideally so that everything can be easily reconfigured and adapted to different needs. Does anyone have experience with assembling this or tips on the best way to add or swap modular elements? Any advice on stability and possible additions to make the furniture more versatile would also be very helpful.

Important for interior frames: Secure them firmly with screws and anchors; otherwise, they will quickly lose their effectiveness.

If you also want to install drawers, make sure to use suitable sliding rails. Original Besta drawers have standard dimensions that fit well into the grid system.

Is there a way to add extra compartments below or above drawers without modifying the entire side panel? I mean modular compartments, not fixed installations.

This can be achieved by using adjustable shelves that rest on pegs in the side walls. Drawers can then be installed in the spaces between. This system often allows for a combination of open compartments and drawers at different heights.

If you want maximum flexibility, you should also use removable or sliding dividers and shelves. These can be taken out or repositioned as needed. It is important that the side walls have enough pre-drilled holes so that the shelves can be installed variably.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks to everyone – your tips are very helpful! If I encounter any specific issues, I’ll be happy to ask again.
