Hello everyone, I am planning to build the IKEA Besta system as a home office cabinet and want to pay special attention to clean cable management. Specifically, I am looking for ways to assemble and connect the individual components so that the many cables from the PC, monitor, printer, and lighting are hidden and neatly organized. Does anyone have experience with how to best integrate cable grommets or cable channels without compromising the appearance or stability of the Besta modules? I am also interested in tips on suitable materials or accessories that match the design and load capacity of the Besta system. Additionally, it would be great to know if there are any special tricks for adding or replacing cables later on without having to completely dismantle the cabinet.

Here is a brief guide on how to set up the Besta system as a home office cabinet with hidden cables:

1. Planning: List all devices along with their connections and cable lengths. Decide where you want to place cable outlets in the back panels or shelves.

2. Materials: Use plastic cable grommets with rubber lips for a neat finish; they protect the cables and look more professional than simple drilled holes.

3. Installation: Drill rectangular or round openings in the back or side panels at the required spots. Press or glue in the cable grommets.

4. Cable management: Gather cables into flexible spiral wraps or cable ducts. Secure them with cable ties or attachable clips on the back of the Besta units.

5. Power strips: Mount these horizontally on the inside of the back panel using screws or adhesive pads, so that the outlets remain partially accessible from the front—short flat plugs are helpful here.

6. Flexibility: Plan for at least a few extra cable outlets for future expansions to accommodate any changes.

It is important not to compromise stability when drilling. Avoid openings that are too large in load-bearing elements. This way, you achieve a clean appearance and practical cable routing.

I think people often overcomplicate this part. Why not simply bundle the cables neatly and run them visibly along the edge in a clean cable trunking? This takes less effort and is usually more flexible. The idea of hiding everything is sometimes more about appearances than practicality and can cost unnecessary time and frustration. I believe functionality should take priority over minimalist aesthetics.

That is an interesting counterargument. However, especially in small apartments or open-plan spaces, a clean and tidy appearance is highly valued, particularly when the BESTA cabinet is prominently visible as a piece of furniture. Investing in cable management often pays off by creating a better working environment. Of course, this depends on personal preference.
