meoken2Hello everyone, I’m currently working on assembling the Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, especially when it comes to integrating glass shelves. My question is: What special considerations or additional steps do I need to keep in mind when fitting Metod cabinets with glass shelves? I’m particularly interested in how to properly install the glass shelves — how long should the dowels or screws be set, which brackets or supports are recommended, and are there any pitfalls to watch out for when loading or leveling the glass shelves?
I already have some experience with the standard wooden shelves from the series, but the glass shelves seem much more delicate due to their material. Maybe someone has tips for optimal installation or advice on tools and assembly steps that are especially important for glass shelves. Thanks in advance!

Hello, when installing Ikea Metod cabinets with glass shelves, you should especially keep the following points in mind:
- Be sure to use the brackets provided by Ikea for glass shelves, as they are matched to the thickness of the glass.
- The glass supports should be inserted flush and firmly into the holes in the side panels; nothing should wobble here.
- Glass shelves are often intended only for decoration or light use; heavy loads like pots and pans should not be placed on them.
- When assembling the cabinets, as usual, first build the base carcass, then insert the glass shelf supports, and finally carefully place the glass shelves.
- If you allow longer assembly times, it is recommended to slightly turn the supports shortly after inserting them into the carcass to ensure they sit securely.
It is important to always handle the glass shelves with clean hands or gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints or adhesive residues on the surface. In general, Ikea’s assembly instructions also provide explicit guidance for glass shelves, which are worth following carefully.

I’m especially interested in how to correctly install the glass shelves – how long should the dowels be set, which brackets are recommended, and are there any pitfalls to watch out for when loading or adjusting the glass shelves?A very good topic that is often underestimated. I’ll gladly go into detail:
1. Preparation: Check the glass thickness carefully (usually 4 mm (0.16 inch) for Metod) and only use suitable brackets recommended by Ikea. These are specifically designed for 4 mm glass.
2. Installing the brackets: The small metal or plastic brackets fit into the pre-drilled holes in the side panels. It is important that these brackets fit firmly with no play or wobble. This is achieved by positioning the brackets with gentle pressure and, if needed, a slight twist for exact placement.
3. Inserting the glass shelf: Carefully lift the glass and place it on the brackets. There should be minimal clearance to prevent the glass from shifting.
4. Load limit: Glass shelves do not support as much weight as wooden shelves. They are generally intended for decorative purposes or, at best, lighter kitchen accessories.
A common pitfall: If the brackets are installed too loosely, the glass may shift or even get damaged when opening or closing the doors.
Have you already chosen specific cabinet models or shelf depths? The depth also significantly affects the stability of the glass panels.
One more tip: Avoid contact with water or steam on the brackets, as plastic parts may swell depending on their quality.

When assembling the cabinets, as usual, first build the main carcass, then insert the glass shelf supports, and finally carefully place the glass shelves. That is exactly the correct procedure. In addition to RENMA’s clear structure, I also recommend the following:
- Make sure the cabinets are perfectly level before inserting the glass shelf supports. Even a slight tilt can later cause pressure marks or cracks in the glass.
- Check the edges of the glass shelf before placing it. Sometimes there are small burrs or residues from the manufacturing process. These should be gently removed with fine sandpaper to reduce the risk of injury.
- If possible, test the load in advance with an evenly distributed weight before placing all heavy items on the glass.
It is also important that the glass shelves are well secured against slipping. Some supports offer a slightly rubberized surface or soft pads that help protect the glass.
If the Ikea instructions are no longer available, it is worth carefully reviewing the included leaflet at purchase, as it often contains very valuable details.
