Hello everyone,

I am planning to install Ikea Metod cabinets with soft-close functionality in my new kitchen. I want to use the soft-close hinge mechanism offered by Ikea, but I’m unsure about the most practical and reliable way to install the hinges and doors.

I am particularly interested in:
- Is there a trick to properly align the soft-close hinges before the doors are finally attached?
- Should the continuous adjustability of the hinges be used only after the entire installation is complete, or is it better to adjust them repeatedly during assembly?
- How can I prevent the doors from misaligning or the soft-close function from not working correctly?

It would be great if someone with experience could share tips and step-by-step advice, or useful pointers that Ikea’s instructions might only cover briefly.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

Installing soft-close hinges on Metod cabinets step by step:
- Screw the hinges onto the cabinet carcasses.
- Position the doors loosely, then slide and hook the hinges in.
- Tighten all screws by hand only, then adjust using the adjustment screws.
- Once perfectly aligned, fully tighten the screws.

This method ensures a clean installation without binding.

Hello jayce_jo,

your question is very precise, and especially with Ikea Metod cabinets with soft-close hinges, the correct procedure is indeed crucial for a good result and the durability of the hinges.

I will therefore go into detail on the entire installation step:

- First, the cabinet carcass should be securely and stably fixed in place to minimize any movement.
- The soft-close hinges come pre-assembled from Ikea, so you can easily screw them in by hand into the designated drill holes. Important: only screw them in lightly at first, so that adjustments can still be made later.
- In the second step, the door is temporarily hung, and the hinge is then hooked into the cabinet. Now you can test whether the soft-close function works in principle.
- Next comes the alignment. Ikea hinges allow adjustment in three dimensions (up/down, left/right, depth/in/out). Start with the vertical adjustment, as it has the greatest influence on door alignment.
- At the same time, make horizontal adjustments until the gaps between the doors are as even as possible. It is recommended to use better quality screwdrivers here—durable and precise—because the adjustment screws are sensitive.
- Always make sure to open and close the doors slightly during adjustments to ensure the soft-close mechanism operates without unwanted friction.
- The screws for final fixation should only be tightened fully once all adjustments are correct. Screwing too tightly can warp the wood.

One tip at the end: avoid applying excessive pressure on the doors during installation, as Ikea Metod doors are relatively thin and can warp.

If you are interested in specific tool recommendations or details about the hinge types, just let me know!

Really thorough description, but I wonder if all that precision might be a bit over the top. Ikea designed Metod intentionally not as a professional kitchen, but as a flexible system for everyone.

The soft-close hinges are sturdy enough that you can accept some slight misalignment without them jamming right away. I would even argue that people often spend too much time fiddling with the adjustment screws and still hardly notice any difference compared to a straightforward installation.

Of course, if you have very high standards for perfection, precise adjustments are essential. But for typical household use, it’s usually enough to mount the hinges, hang the doors, and fine-tune a little if you notice something isn’t fitting quite right.

In the end, what really matters is that the soft-close hinges do their job, and you don’t need a woodworking masterpiece every single time.
