ᐅ How do I adjust the alignment of Ikea Metod cabinet doors after installation?

KikarHello everyone,
I recently assembled an Ikea Metod kitchen unit and now face the issue that the doors are not properly aligned. Especially with the wall cabinets, the doors seem either not to hang parallel or the gaps between them are uneven. My question is: How can I optimize the alignment of the Ikea Metod doors after assembly as precisely and efficiently as possible? Are there any proven tips or tricks to keep in mind, particularly for doors that are difficult to adjust properly? I have already tried fine-tuning the screws on the hinges, but this does not always achieve the desired result. I look forward to your advice and suggestions, as I want to achieve the best possible finish.

The Metod doors can generally be adjusted in three places: top, bottom, and middle. It is important to proceed step by step: turn only one screw slightly at a time and then observe how the door moves. If the gaps are uneven, the hinges can also be slightly aligned to the right or left. A good tip is to first roughly align all doors and then refine them in several passes.
Hello Kikar,
To optimize the door alignment in Ikea Metod, you should follow a systematic approach to avoid spending too much time on trial and error. Here is my step-by-step procedure:
- First, check the cabinet box alignment: If the cabinet box itself is already crooked, even the best door adjustment won’t help much.
- The Metod hinges have three adjustment options:
- Lateral (horizontal, left/right) for adjusting the gap width between the doors
- Height adjustment at the top of the hinge to compensate for height differences
- Depth (in/out) to align the door flush with the cabinet box
- Start with the lateral adjustment: Carefully adjust the screw with a suitable screwdriver. Important: always turn in small increments (about quarter turns).
- Next, adjust the height, also carefully, so the doors don’t bind.
- Finally, adjust the depth, as this usually has the strongest impact on the overall visual impression.
- Tip: Use a spirit level or a straightedge as a control aid to better detect misalignments.
- Do not force the doors and avoid over-tightening the screws, as this can damage the mechanism.
- If the doors are very uneven, it might help to loosen all screws once, set the doors to the desired position, and then tighten them again.
The quality of the hinges also matters. Ikea uses solid fittings in Metod, but mechanical tolerances may still occur. This means you cannot always achieve perfectly millimeter-precise results, but with a systematic approach, you can get very close to a professional appearance.
What are the gaps like? Are they different on all doors, or is the focus on specific cabinets? That could help clarify the answer further.

With this method, patience is the key to success :-) After assembling my doors, I first made rough adjustments, loosening all the hinges a bit, then adjusted them step by step from left to right to achieve an even result. It also helps to regularly take a step back and view the overall result from different angles.
Also important: some doors are sensitive and can be damaged if too much force is applied – it’s better to make several fine adjustments than to twist too hard and risk breaking something!
I wish you the best of luck, it will work out! It’s really worth it in the end, as everything looks neat and harmonious – that’s what makes the kitchen special.
